Korean Kitchen [Macchan] / コリアンキッチン 「味ちゃん」(まっちゃん）

I had the day off on Mikako's birthday so of course we went to Shin-Okubo.  We decided to have lunch at a different restaurant that day and went to the Korean Kitchen [Macchan].  But we still ordered the same item as we would have at [Kanton no Omoide].  That would be an order of samgyeopsal (which translates to 3 layered flesh and is made with pork belly). 

美香子の誕生日の日自分も休みをいただいてたので、もちろん昼から新大久保に行きました。今日はいつも行く店「カントンの思いで」じゃなく、他の人気店コリアンキッチン「味ちゃん」（まっちゃん）に行きました。注文したのは「カントンの思いで」でいすも頼んでるものサムギョプサル。

Nothing quite as pleasing to the eye as grilling meat, ah, and the smell is heavenly as well (apologies to vegetarians but I love my meat!)

焼いてる肉って美しい、そしてその香りがたまらない！（ベジタリアンの方には申し訳ございませんが、私は肉大好き！）

As I said, beautiful!  言った通り、美しい！

Mustn't forget the toppings and a mug of beer as well.

もちろんトッピングとサラダなども忘れちゃいけません。ビールも飲みました。

Fungo / ファンゴ

A few weeks ago I was having a craving for either a burger or a submarine sandwich and decided to head back to my old neighborhood of Mishuku and headed toward Setagaya Park.  Across the street from the park is Fungo.  On this day, I treated myself to a pastrami sandwich and a beer.

数週間前にバーガーかサンドを食べたくて、前に住んでた所三宿に行って、そかから世田谷公園に向かった。公園の近くにある「ファンゴ」という店に行ってきました。注文したのはパストラミサンドとビール。

At this shop, you can choose from four different kinds of bread - white, graham, baguette, or rye.  I figured the pastrami would go really well with the baguette.  You can also elect to have cheese with your sandwich with a choice of Monterey Jack, Red Cheddar or Emmantal.  I had forgotten to order myself a choice of cheese and had myself a cheeseless pastrami sandwich which is served with a side of fries.

選べられるパンは４種類あります ‐ ホワイト、グラハム、バケット、とライ。パストラミならバケットが一番合うと思ってそれをチョイス。チーズも３種類から選べられるけどこの日はチーズなしで注文しました。ただ忘れただけ。選べるチーズはモントレージャック、レッドチェダーとエメンタール。ちょっと残念。チーズなしでも美味しいですが。

My beer of choice today was Hoegaarden White.

今日飲んだビールはヒューガルデンホワイト。

Shinshu Soba Dokoro [Sojibo] / 信州そば処 「そじ坊」

Summer is always a great season to go out for soba.  This is a soba chain restaurant called [Sojibo].  The one we went to is located in the Carrot Tower in Sangenjaya.  I chose a simple zaru soba / tempura set while Mikako ordered the hiyashi sansai tororo soba.  Our sobas are served with fresh wasabi that you grate yourself.

夏の季節になるとやっぱ冷えた蕎麦も食べたくなるな。今回紹介する店は蕎麦のチェン店信州そば処「そじ坊」。私たちが行ったのはキャロットタワーの地下にある三軒茶屋店。自分が注文したのはざるそばと夏野菜の天ぷらセット。美香子が注文したのは冷やし山菜とろろそば。この店は生わさび使用でとっても良い感じ。

The vegetables included asparagus, eggplant (aubergines if you want to be English), okra, squash, and myoga (I'm not sure what that translates to in English).

今日の天ぷらはアスパラ、茄子、おくら、みょうが、とかぼちゃ。

Hiyashi sansai tororo soba / 冷やし山菜とろろそば


Hm, how to translate that in English.  Hiyashi means cold.  Sansai are mountain vegetables, tororo is ground up mountain potato, and soba of course are the noodles.

Rooftop Beer Garden / 屋上ビールガーデン

Summer in Tokyo is when roof top beer gardens are open for business.  And until the end of June, this particular garden was featuring an all-you-can drink menu so of course my friends and I had to take advantage of it.

日本の夏と言えばやっぱり屋上のビールガーデンですね。渋谷にあるビールガーデンは六月末まで安い価格で飲み放題でした。もちろん友達と行ってきました。

Just a small turn out this time around, but nothing beats having beer with good food and good friends.

今回は小人数だったが、やっぱりビールは美味しいものと中の良い友達と過ごすのは最高。

Hungry Heaven / ハングリー・ヘブン

Today I'm featuring a shop that even my father would enjoy.  So, why does this particular shop have two names?  The answer is quite simple.  During the day, this is a burger shop called [Hungry Heaven].  At night, it becomes the yakiniku restaurant [Gyubig].  I went here on my day off after I a well-known food co-ordinator introduced one of their burgers on an afternoon television program.  It's located just 3 minutes away from Meguro station on the Yamanote Line.  I treated myself to an avocado cheese burger.

今日紹介する店は自分のお父さんも行ってみたくなると思う店だ。でもなぜこの店が二つの名前を持つの？それはね、昼はバーガー屋の「ハングリー・ヘブン」。夜になると、店がバーガー屋から焼き肉レストラン「Gyubig」に変わります。僕がこの店を知ったのは昼の番組で料理の研究家森崎友紀が紹介してた。目黒駅から徒歩で３分。今日自分が食べたのはアボカドチーズバーガー。

Avocado Cheeseburger / アボカドチーズバーガー

The Avocado Cheeseburger is made with a meat patty, mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, cheddar cheese and a choice of tartar or mustard sauce.  I chose the mustard sauce.

アボカドチーズバーガーの中身はパティ、マヨネーズ、マスタード、レタス、トマト、オニオン、アボカド、チェダーチーズとタルタルかマスタードソース。僕が選んだのはマスタードソース。

Burger is served with french fries.

This is the cover of Hungry Heaven's menu.  You can choose from a wide variety of burgers.  I'm curious to try their Hungry Heaven India - a curry burger!!

これがフングリーヘブンのメニューのカバー。選べられるバーガーは豊富です。今度行ったらフングリーヘブン・インディアを食べてみたい。メニューに書いてあるのは店の自信作 ‐ カレーのハンバーガーです！

Krung Siam / クルンサイアム

On the same day that I treated myself to Moroccon food, at night, Mikako and I went out for some Thai cuisine in Sangenjaya.  Located off Chazawa Dori in a basement of building.  I remember when it used to be a location of a yakitori restaurant that I enjoyed going to.  This Thai restaurant that now occupies the same place has been in business for a while but it was our first visit there.  I ordered the Thai staple of khao phat krapao kai (fried rice with chicken and basil) while Mikako had the khao phat kung (fried rice with shrimp) and we shared a plate of pak bun fai daen (stir-fried Chinese morning glory, also known as water spinach).

二子玉川で一人食べたモロッコ料理の同じ日、夕飯は嫁と一緒に三軒茶屋にあるタイ料理店「クルンさいアム」に行きました。三茶の茶沢通りでビルの地下にあるみせです。昔この場所は僕が良く行った焼き鳥屋でした。何年か前にその店がつぶれて現在このタイ料理店が誕生した。今回初めて行ってみた。自分が注文したのはタイの定番料理ガイ・パット・バイ・ガパオ・ラート・カオ（鶏挽肉のホーリー・バジル炒め）、そして美香子が頼んだのはカオ・パット・クン（海老入りチャーハン）。あと私たちが好きなパックブン・ファイデン（空芯菜のニンニク炒め）も頼みました。

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere to it but perhaps we are a bit biased as our favorite Thai restaurant is Bahn Kirao in Shimokitazawa.  The stir-fried Chinese morning glory at that restaurant is by far the better tasting. 

こちの店の雰囲気は良いんですが、やっぱり私たちの好きなタイ料理店は下北沢にある「バン・キラオ」。そちの空芯菜炒めは絶品！

A Walk around Futakotamagawa / 二子玉川の散歩

A couple of months ago when I went to that Moroccan restaurant, I also took a walk around the neighborhood.  My main reason for going was to run an errand for my mother as the area around Futakotamagawa station has expanded into one really huge shopping complex, very popular with the housewife crowd.

二ヶ月前に二子玉川でモロッコ料理店に行った時、その日はその周辺も散歩した。目的はモロッコ料理ではなかった。あの日、アメリカに居るお母さんの頼みで行った。今二子玉川（通称 ニコタマ）駅の周辺は巨大なショッピングエリアに変わった。主婦のあいだで大人気で何かのテレビ番組で聞いてた。

This whole area is one big shopping complex, or rather there are three different but large shopping areas.  I was just looking for some origami paper I tell ya.  But I knew that I was going to have lunch at that Moroccon place.  Also a lot of art objects around the area.

駅の周辺はでっかいショッピングモールしかない、とは言え、本当は三ヶ所のショッピングエリアがある。折り紙を買いに行くだけだった。でも絶対あのモロッコ料理店でランチを食べるのは頭の中で決めてた。あちこちにアートのオブジェもありましたな。

And I came across this nice little organic doughnut shop and bought myself a couple.  I had one made with sugarcane and another made with black beans and soy.

そして商店街のほうでこういう可愛いドーナッツショップを発見しました。「はらドーナッツ」。 もちろんドーナッツを買いました。選んだのはサトウキビと丹波黒豆きなこ。

Aside from the shopping areas, the station is located along the Tama River.  A popular place for people to have picnics and barbecues.

ショッピング以外に駅は玉川沿いにあることなので、この辺は大人気のバービーキュースポット。

But you really want to know what's great about this place.  You can buy yourself an ice cold beer and relax while looking at the river.
