Before surgery, not lookin' quite so right.

That definitely doesn't look right either!

Anyway, surgery last Monday was a success and I am currently at home.  I get to replace my current half-cast with a wrist supporter on Monday.  Go back again Tuesday, then I have my regular appointment for diabetes on Wednesday.  Heck, I'm becoming like my mother with all these hospital visits.  Still, rehab for using my left hand is a challenge.  I don't even have the strength to squeeze a tube of toothpaste yet.

I won't bore you with extended posts about my hospital stay - maybe a post on Japanese hospital food though.  To all my faithful readers, I'm back and I shall write new posts soon.

As you can see in the picture above, writing is a little difficult for me right now.  What happened?  Last Sunday I went ice skating for the first time in 30 years.  I slid.  I fell.  I broke my wrist in two places.  This cast is temporary.  The bone is too far out of line so I'm having surgery this coming Monday where the doctors will cut into my wrist, insert a pin, and set the bone back as close to its original position as possible.  Heading into the hospital on Friday morning so this may be the last post for at least week or so.

Japanese Microbrew Tour - Okinawa /

Its nearing hanami season in Tokyo.  However, if you follow the cherry blossom map, you would know that they first blossom in Okinawa and hence this beer - Orion Ichiban Sakura which of course translates to Orion First Cherry Blossom.  I didn't really taste any cherry blossoms but the can is cute, don't you think?

Old American Casual Bar [Bat Boy] /

My friend and I went to one last place before callng it a night.  We decided to have a nightcap at a bar called [Bat Boy].  We only stayed for one drink.  I decided to treat myself to a glass of nihon shu (that would be Japanesesake for the less informed.)

And so we ended our evening.

Bistro Taberoya /

Who says two guys can't go to a French restaurant.  Yep, after having a few beers and a bunch of deep-fried morsels, my friend and I went in search of another restaurant for a regular dinner.  First we checked out this Italian place but it was reserved for the evening.  Then we thought about going to this izakaya but bagged that idea.  Then we found ourselves walking along one of those back-alley type roads and came upon this little French bistro called "Taberoya".  It looked kind of homey so we decided to have our meal there.

Oh my, it's been a while since I had myself any French cuisine.  It might have been at my friend's wedding who I was dining with. We had a bit of everything it seems and it was all delicious!

First, an appetizer of shrimp and ham.

Crab & crab miso mousse that you spread on the bread.  Yummy!!

While eating at a French restaurant, one must order the standard escargot!

France is also known for its cheese so we had to have a cheese dish as well.  These are cheese canapes.

For our entree, beef with a red wine sauce.

We did not forget our veggies as we ordered a salad with our meal.

Ooh, these were awesome!  Scallops with a garlic butter sauce!

And a beef steak with the chef's special sauce.

Lets see, am I forgetting something?  French restaurant.  Something to drink with our meal.  Beer?  Of course not.  Its a wine night.  First we started off with a red.  A Garriottine Malbec (I'm not a wine connoisseur so don't ask me how to describe the taste).

Next, we had to try a white so we went with a Riesling Trocken 2010 from Reichsrat von Buhl.

Oh, no we did not order bottles.  We only had a glass each.  And finally, we had a Sauvignon by Louis Eschenauer.

A very nice place.  I think I might have to come back here with Mikako some time.

A fair selection of wines if you're into that kind of thing.

Bon Appetit!

Kirakudo /

Getting back to some food posts, last month a friend of mine got off work early and invited me out to have a few drinks with him.  We met at a place called [Kirakudo].  I wonder what a place like this would be called in English.  Its a kushi-age place.  Kushi is skewer, age is deep-fried.  The restaurants serves different kinds of meats and vegetables on a skewer that are deep-fried.  You then dip it into a sauce and enjoy!

Oh, you would think that the food is heavy as everything is deep-fried in oil, but you would be mistaken.  Everything we ordered was delicious!

Okay, so the cabbage wasn't deep-fried.

So, what is all that pictured above?  We had some maguro, shiitake mushrooms, shrimp, renkon, bacon, asparagus, garlic, ham, and I can't remember what else.

Bon Appetit!

A Walk around Yushima Seido and the Holy Resurrection Cathedral /

No, that is not an error in the title.  I walked around Yushima Seido (not be confused with the more popular Yushima Tenman-gu or Yushima Tenjin as most people call it).  The Yushima Seido is located right across the street from Kanda Myojin.  The area around Yushima Seido also encompasses the Shrine of Confucius, Shrine of Shinno and the Site of the Shoheizaka College.  And not too far from Ochanomizu Station is the Holy Resurrection Cathedral which I also took a short look at.

Ema Stand (Most of the prayers were to pass exams) /

The following pictures are of the Holy Resurrection Cathedral.

But instead of heading directly back to the station, I had to check out the specialty hard rock/heavy metal cd shop (and made a couple of purchases as well) but that's another story.

A Walk around Kanda Myojin (Part 3) /

More points of interest to check out at Kanda Myojin.

Mizuno Toshikata Kensho Monument /

Toshikata Mizuno was a Japanese artist (1866-1908) who painted in a modified form of the ukiyo-e style.

And slightly apart from the main temple grounds in a small park, I came across this old-style building called the "Kanda House".

Kanda House /

March also happens to be the month of the Hina Matsuri, so I was lucky to see the Kanda House diplay their hina dolls.

I liked the little frogs I found around Kanda House as well.

The garden in front of Kanda House /

View of Kanda House from Kanda Myojin's Roof Garden /

I took a few pictures of the roof garden as well but there weren't that many flowers in bloom so I decided not to add them to this post.

For more information on Kanda House check out their site (in either English or Japanese) at:

Houren Mikoshi Houanden (portable shrine storage building) /

And what's that in the background?  It's the Tokyo Sky Tree!

I noticed on the ema (prayer boards) that most of the wishes were related to drawing and animation.  Why, I do not know.

Leaving Kanda Myojin (but continuing my walk) /
