Date to Odaiba /

On a weekend in March, the wife and I went out a date and we went to the popular date spot of Odaiba.  Of course the main goal was to do a bit of shopping but it was a fairly nice day so we did a lot of walking as well.  To get to Odaiba you must take the Yurikamome Line which runs across the Rainbow Bridge.

Cherry Blossoms at Night 2013 /

After the D-Lite show, we met up with a couple of friends of ours and decided to check out the cherry blossoms at night at Chidorigafuchi Park.  Since a lot of people check out the night blossoms, there were also quite a few food stalls along the road to Yasukuni Shrine.

After checking out the blossoms at night, it was time for a snack as well.

They looked delicious but we didn't have any.

But how could I pass up bacon wrapped asparagus?

We still enjoyed cherry blossoms at night while eating.

D-Lite (from Bigbang) D'scover Tour 2013 in Japan [DLive] / D-Lite D’scover 2013年 日本ツアー 「DLive」

Here is the real reason we were near Chidorigafuji Park.  This is Nippon Budokan and for 2 days, Korean artist D-Lite from Bigbang was in concert.  He had just released a Japanese pops cover album and as Mikako is currently a very big fan of Bigbang (and D-Lite), she went and bought tickets.  I just came along for the ride.  Fortunately, I knew most of the songs so I could enjoy the show as well.

Flowers for D-Lite from many television shows and artists, etc.

Although most, if not all, my American friends will not recognize the songs, I am providing the set list below.  GUMMY is a Korean female vocalist who was a guest on this tour and sang three songs.  Oh, and Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth) played guitar on the Tokyo dates and will play guitar on the Yokohama date.

I borrowed the set list from a D-Lite fan blogger.  I decided not to bother with any English translations as these are all songs by Japanese artists.

Cherry Blossoms 2013 /

This year I didn't think I was going to get a chance to see any cherry blossoms at my leisure except through the windows of a bus.  I had no time for any excursions during the weekday and the weekends when the blossoms were in full bloom, I had other plans.  So imagine my surprise when on a Sunday at the end of March as the wife and I were headed to Budokan for the D-Lite concert, we saw cherry blossoms in full bloom around an area called Chidorigafuji.

Okay, no cherry blossoms on the picture above but I thought it looked rather scenic.

Some other flowers in bloom as well.  Unfortunately, I am not a flower expert so I don't know what kind of flower this is.

You can see some people having their hanami beneath the trees.

I think this might be my favorite cherry blossom picture this year with its reflection in the pond.

Until next year.

Tsukemen [Nakamura] /

I know I've been neglecting my blog but I do have a lot of future posts just waiting to be written.  To tide you over, let me introduce another ramen shop I discovered in Shibuya.  I was meeting Paul (the guy who invited me to the Loaded show) at night as he was meeting another friend who runs a bar nearby.  Before heading to the bar we decided to grab a bite to eat and this ramen shop, [Tsukemen Nakamura] was located close by.

Tsukemen translates to a "dipping broth" ramen.  This style of ramen has become quite popular the past few years and as you can see by the picture above, the ramen noodles are in a separate bowl.  You dip the ramen into the broth.  The broth has a spicy miso base.  Quite delicious.

The broth /

The ramen noodles were the thick kind /

Once you finished the noodles, you can add a bit of what's in this to your soup and just enjoy the broth as well.  Most soba shops do this but I found it unusual for a ramen shop.

Bon Appetit!
