Eikichi Yazawa Concert Tour 2010 [Twist] / 矢沢永吉コンサートツアー ２０１０ 『Twist』

On Sunday, December 19, 2010, I went to my first ever Eikichi Yazawa concert. This may mean nothing to my American friends who probably don't know who the hell he is in the first place, but does impress my Japanese friends as tickets are hard to come by and sell out quickly. Yazawa is now in his 60s and still rocking, you could perhaps call him the Mick Jagger of Japan (I'm sure Yazawa fans may disagree though, but that should give you an idea of how popular he is). The fact that he can do five consecutive shows at Budokan must also tell you something. So, how did I manage this feat? Originally, I was going to join my wife and sister-in-law and check out the Korean pop band FT Island who were playing the same night in a small venue called the JCB Hall near the Tokyo Dome. Mikako had scored two tickets to the show through their fan club. Trying to get one more ticket through other channels proved to be a fruitless endeavor. But we have a friend who is a big fan of Yazawa who goes to his show every year and I had mentioned to him and Mikako how I wanted to see Yazawa in concert at least once in my lifetime. And he came through with a ticket for me!

２０１０年、１２月１９日、日曜日、私が初めての矢沢永吉のライブを見に行きました。アメリカの友達なら誰でも知らないと思いますが、日本人の友達なら、スゲ～しか言えない。なぜならば、超人気で、チケットを手に入るのも結構苦労しますから。矢沢も還暦なのに、今でもロックをつづいてます！カッコイイと言うしかない。毎年の年末、武道館で５日連続でライブを行う！それを知ると矢沢の凄さが分かるでしょう。さて、どうやって矢沢のライブに行けたのかって？ 同じ日に東京ドームの近くのJCBホールで韓国のポップバンドFT Islandのライブもあった。本当は美香子と美香子の妹と一緒に行く予定だったが、FT Islandの現在の人気ぷりでこのライブのチケットも取るのは難しい。美香子はFTのファンクラブの入って、チケットを注文した。ファンクラブのメンバーでも抽選で当選するかどうかも分からない。美香子の運が良かった上で２枚も取りました（メンバーは２枚までしか買えない制限もあった）。もう一枚取ろうとしましたが、やっぱり無理がありました。そこで、僕の友達が大の矢沢ファンで毎年年末のライブを行ってる。以前にその友達に僕も一回位は矢沢のライブを見たいなと言った。そして、それが叶ったわけです。

But what makes a Yazawa show so different from another shows is his fan base. Mostly young and middle-age men you would not want to introduce to your daughters, with their feathered back hair a la James Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause" and their all white suits (or all red or all yellow). They are similar to fans of the Grateful Dead and travel around Japan following Yazawa and going to all of his shows. You can't miss them or their deko tora (decoration trucks) - see pic below. They may also remind you of bosozoku (biker gangs) as they gather around in a parking lot waving these large flags and chanting, "Ei-chan! Ei-chan! Ei-chan!"

永ちゃんライブは他のライブとは結構違うな。なぜと言えば、永ちゃんのファンが凄い！かかりたくない様な怖いオッサンたちばっかり。髪型もリーセントで着てる服も白いスーツとか。会場の駐車場で畠を振りながら、永ちゃんコールを叫んでる。全国の永ちゃんファンも集まるので、なんかの集団か分からない位迫力がある。永ちゃんが描いてるデコトラも多い！

There is one other must-have item for a Yazawa concert. That would be an Ei-chan towel. In one of his songs, usually the encore, there is section in the song where everyone at the show will throw their Yazawa towel into the air. Strange, but interesting and my friend who got my ticket for me was kind enough to buy me an Ei-chan towel as well.

J. S. Burgers Cafe

Not too long ago, a new burger shop had opened near my place of employ. I finally found the time to check it out and treated myself to lunch on a Saturday. The J. S. stands for "Journal Standard". The day I went, the shop had just opened their second floor. They were also serving a special burger for a limited time which is what I chose. It was their Bacon Mushroom Cheeseburger. The burger also includes lettuce and asparagus! And also comes with fries. It was quite delicious.

ちょっと前に僕の職場の近くに新しいバーガーショップが出来た。結構気になってたんですが中々行けなかった。やっと自分の休みの日に行ってまいりました。J.S.はジャーナル・スタンダードの略です。行った時にちょうど二階席がオーペンしたばっかりだたので、その記念かどうか分かりませんが、メニューに期間限定のバーガーが載ってた。それを注文しました。ベーコンマッシュルームチーズバーガーでした。バーガーにもちろんレタスも入ってるが、その他にアスパラも入ってた！ポテト付きです。ボリュームもあって結構美味しかった！

Ningen Isu Mini Live / 人間椅子ミニライブ

Last month I decided to watch a show at my place of employ. It was a band called Ningen Isu. Japan's Black Sabbath. I've actually seen this band in concert quite a few years ago and thought they were one of the coolest bands. I think I had all of their CDs at one time (but I may have sold them some time between when I saw them and now). The show was in support of their DVD release. As this was a store event, I figured they would play maybe three songs or so and that would be that, but I was happy that they played for almost an entire hour! It felt like I was watching an intimate club show. I was surprised that my wife was familiar with this band but I had forgotten one important thing - this band is originally from Aomori Prefecture!

先月自分の職場であるバンドがライブをするのを知って、見ようと思った。そのバンドは人減椅子。東洋のサバスと呼ばれてるバンド。一度聴いたら、なるほどと思っちゃう。何年か前に人間椅子の単独ライブも行った事もあって、また見れるのが楽しみでした。人間椅子は初のライブDVDをリリースの記念ライブでした。インストアイベントだったので、あんまり期待はしてなかった。どせ３か４曲位しかやらないんだろうと勝手思い込んで。でも一時間近くまでやってくれました！小さなライブハウスに行った様な感じで最高でした！あと驚いたのは、うちの嫁がこのバンドを知ってたこと。そう言えば、私は一つの事完全に忘れてた。人間椅子は青森出身のバンドでした！

When I went to work the next day, I had a surprise. I received an autograph from the three band members (thanks to a co-worker of mine) and it was signed to me as well. How cool is that?

次の日仕事に行ったら、販促部の人からプレゼントを貰いました。なんと人間椅子のサイン入りの色紙。や～、嬉しいですね。そして“あーにー餐江”と書かれました。大事にしますよ。

Some time after the Bon Jovi concert and before the next live show I went to, a friend of mine said let's do lunch. It just so happens that there was a place I had been wanting to check out but just didn't yet have the opportunity to do so. But now my friend gave me an excuse to check out this place. I was curious because the store sign outlines Aomori Prefecture (hometown of my wife). The place is called [Woody's]. The sign advertises the place as a Japanese Dining Bar and Curry Shop. I decided to try their curry - a garlic cream cheese curry it was. My friend, along with his soon to be 3 year old daughter shared a meal consisting of a rice dish topped with a mound of tofu, a poached egg and burdock root. We also shared some salmon.

ボン・ジョヴィと次行くライブの間、ある友達が一緒にランチでも食べに行かないという誘いがありました。ちょうどう気になってた店がありまして、そこ行ってみないかと提案しました。三軒茶屋にあるジャパニーズダイニングバー＆カレーの店と書かれたサインがありまして、店の名前は「Woody's」。なぜ気になったというのは、店の看板が青森県の形が描かれたからです。ランチだったので、ガーリッククリームチーズカレーを頼みました。友達はもうすぐ３歳になる娘も一緒だったので、丼ものをチョイス。それはご飯の上に豆腐、温泉たまごとゴボウが乗せたものです。三人で鮭も注文した。

The food was great, the atmosphere was nice, so we decided to have an informal birthday party here for my friend's daughter Rino and his wife Aki. I was dying to try the house specialty's garlic cream cheese nabe. We also ordered a variety of other dishes as well.

食べ物も美味しいし、雰囲気も良かったので、一週間後、この店で友達の娘と奥さまの誕生会を開いた。この店のガーリッククリームチーズ鍋も気になって仕方ありませんでした。鍋以外にいろいろ頼みました。

Osechi Ryori (Traditional Japanese New Year's Food) / おせち料理

As we had not travel plans for the New Year's Holidays we decided to splurge and order ourselves some Osechi ryori which could be translated as traditional Japanese New Year's food. Most of the foods have some meanings attached to them such as kazunoko which symbolizes a wish to be gifted with many children or kuro-mame (black soy beans) symbolizing a wish for good health in the new year and konbu (a type of seawood) which is associated with the word yorokobu which means joy. We ordered a two-layer box for our osechi-ryori.

今年のお正月はどこも行かなかったもんで、料理だけをちょっと贅沢して、おせち料理を予約しました。日本ならの過ごし方しようと思った。 私たちが注文したのはおせち二段重。

The first layer includes kuro-mame (black soy beans), chestnuts, shrimp, kazunoko (herring roe), bamboo shoots, carrots, burdock root, devil's tongue and maybe a couple of other items.

壱の重：丹波篠山産黒豆、栗きんとん （なると金時芋使用）、紅白蒲鉾、有頭エビの艶煮、田作り、数の子、鹿児島県産ぶり照り焼き、煮物（竹の子穂先、花人参、ふき、乱切人参、ごぼう、こんにゃく、結び麩）、絹さや。

The second layer included date-maki, salmon roe, renkon, smoked salmon with marinated onions, more burdock root, squid, and others.

弐の重：伊達巻、三陸産いくら醤油漬、砂糖がけ胡桃、紅白なます、レンコン酢漬け、阿渡尾鶏の肉団子、紅鮭のスモークサーモン、たまねぎマリネ、たたきごぼう、松笠いか明太子和え、松前漬けの数の子添え。

Tokyo Dome Illumination / 東京ドームイルミネーション

As I was at the Tokyo Dome three times last month, twice for the Bon Jovi concerts and once to meet up with Mikako and her sister after an FT Island show that I also had a chance to check out the Holiday Illumination around the area.

先月は東京ドーム周辺は三回位いったもんで、その周りのイルミネーションもついでに見ました。

Okay, so this wasn't part of the illumination, but heck, it's Ultraman!!

これはイルミネーションとは関係ないと分かってますが、ウルトラマンだよ！！

HAPPY NEW YEAR / 明けましておめでとう

A Happy New Year everyone. I will continue to write posts about my life in Tokyo, along with the books I've read, the movies I've watched, concerts I've been to, the festivals I attend and whatever else comes to mind. This year is the Year of the Rabbit according to the Chinese Horoscope and since I was born on the Year of the Rabbit, I'm hoping I will have a great year this year (not that last year was a bad one or anything and I still have a few more posts to write about). Please join me again this year.
