One of our favorite festivals to go to in Tokyo is the Furusato Festival, held at the Tokyo Dome for a couple of weeks in January. This year, my wife and I, along with our friends Yukio and Reiko went to the event on Sunday, January 18. This event brings together all forty-seven prefectures of Japan under one roof where you can buy regional items, try regional foods and craft beers, and see demonstrations of different major festivals such as the Nebuta Festival of Aomori.
一月に僕と妻が好きな祭りが開催してました。１月９日から１８日まで、東京ドームでふるさと祭りが開いてました。この祭りは日本全国の都道府県が一つの場所に集めて、全国の名産品や祭りが楽しめるイベントです。今回、僕と妻が友達の幸男と玲ちゃんと一緒に行きました。

イベントのチケット。この祭りも結構人気があり、超混んでた。列に並んで、会場に入るまでどのくらいの時間かかるかわからない。

I've never stayed at the Tokyo Dome Hotel but my wife has when she went to see a Bon Jovi concert. She was still living in Aomori at the time.
自分は東京ドームホテルに泊まったことはありません。妻はボン・ジョヴィの東京公演を見にきた時に泊まったことがあるけどね。その時はまだ青森に住んでた。
We thought we got to the place early but it was already this crowded.
早めに来たと思ったら、もうこんなに混んでた。
Of course our first order of business is to head to where all the food booths are.
私たちの最初の目的はもちろん屋台がずらりと並んでるエリア。

We first lined up for the dobunri (rice bowls) and as there were four of us, of course we all ordered a different donburi dish.
最初は人気商品どんぶりコーナーに行きました。私たちは4人のグループだからもちろん違うどんぶりものを買った。
We had sixteen different bowls to choose from.
16種類のどんぶりがあった。
あ～、僕が米沢牛ステーキ丼を選んだ。
And I remember my wife choosing the Hachinohe a fatty silver mackerel bowl.
確か僕の妻が八戸銀サバトロ漬け丼を選んだな。
I think my our friend Yukio ordered the Hida beef, chicken, tomato, and matsutake mushroom bowl from Gifu Prefecture.
友達の幸男は岐阜県の飛騨牛・松茸・とりトマ丼を頼んだ。
玲ちゃんは確か愛知県三河一色産ひつまぶしを選んだ。

The items on the menu from this Kagoshima booth caught my attention. On the left is a jumbo pork skewer. The middle lists Kagoshima brand pork flavored with miso, and on the right is a Kagoshima Berkshire pork mille-feuille steak.
鹿児島県のボースに目が止まった。メニューに鹿児島黒豚炭火焼きジャンボ串、黒豚のみそ漬けと鹿児島ミルフィーユステーキ。
Okay, so I bought the mille-feuille steak.
もちろん、黒豚ミルフィーユステーキを買いました。
And the jumbo Berkshire pork skewer.

Hm, a Hokkaido booth featuring a dish called Genghis Khan which is lamb meat.
う～ん？北海道ブースにジンギスカンが書いてるあるぞ。
Yep, we bought the lamb dish too.
はい、ジンギスカンも買っちゃいました。
Is it pork? Is it beef? Is it lamb? I have no idea!!
豚肉？牛肉？ひつじ肉？知りません！！
Oh, you know what's great about food festivals like this? The free samples you can try. This is something called karashi renkon from Kumamoto Prefecture. It is lotus root with Chinese mustard.
こういう祭りのもう一つの楽しみはいろんなものが試食出来ることだ。これは熊本県のからしレンコン。
I forget which Prefecture was pushing these sour plums.
どの都道府県がこの梅干を押してたのは覚えてない。
A craft beer taster. Again, I forget which prefecture and which microbrewery it was from.
地ビール飲み比べセット。またどの都道府県やなんの地ビールも忘れた。
Yum, crabs! We must still be in the Hokkaido area.
おう、蟹！まだ北海道エリアに居るかな。
Here’ｓ a product from Aomori Prefecture - Taccola, garlic cola from a town called Tacco.
おう、青森県産の飲み物のタッコーラ。田子町のにんにく使用のコーラです。

Yes, I also tried this Schwarz Beer from Gotenba in Shizuoka Prefecture.
はい、静岡県御殿場高原シュバルツビールを飲みました。
My wife loves sea urchin so we just had to try these grilled urchins on the half-shell.
うには自分の妻の大好物。この貝殻のやきうにが気になって食べてみた。
It was so good!
とっても美味しかった！
Another dish to remind my wife of her hometown of Aomori. We shared a bowl of shoga-miso oden.
これは妻が自分のふるさとを思い出させる料理です。青森県の生姜味噌おでん。
Looks like were back at the Aomori area as we check out the menu featuring Shirakami soba.
また青森県のエリアに戻ったかな。ブナの里で白神そばを提供してる。

I forgot the name of this type of noodle but as you can see, the noodles are very large.
この料理の名前も忘れたが、特徴はこのぶ厚い麺。

We did enjoy watching some of the Festival demonstrations as well.

We also ran into one of the mascot characters from Hachinohe City. Koumi-chan is a member of the Ikazukin Family, ika being the word for squid in Japanese.
八戸のゆるキャラのこうみちゃんと会った。こうみちゃんはいかずきんファイミリーの一員です。
After leaving the Tokyo Dome, I ran into this Japanese superhero - Ultraman!! And so ended our food adventure.
東京ドームを去ったあと、日本のヒーローウルトラマンと会った！そして食べ歩きの冒険の幕が閉じた。
