Jack Black's Blood Red Cola & Cafe Azteca Espresso Cola

Another light post featuring some funky drinks I found on sale at a novelty store called the Village Vanguard (just think Spencer's).  Sometimes the shop carries Curiosity Cola as well or you might find Inca Cola as well.  Today, I decided to treat myself to Jack Black's Blood Red Cola and Taylor's Tonics Cafe Azteca Espresso Cola.

今日は気楽なネタを書こうと思ったので、この間買った変わった飲み物を紹介する。面白い本屋・雑貨屋のヴィレッジヴァンガードで発見したコーラーです。名前とラベルが気入ったので、つい買っちゃいました。ジャック・ブラックのブラッド・レッド・コーラーとテイラーズ・トニックスのカフェ・アズテカ・エスプレッソ・コーラー。

Apparently made from a company called Real Soda.  I don't recall seeing this printed on the bottle but this seems to be one of its selling points: "From Black's last raid...second time available in 399 years". Contains guarana and capsicum, so its a cola with a kick.

リアルソーダ社から出てるブラッド・レッド・コーラー。ま、ちょっとぴりっとする様なコーラーです。

Espresso Cola???  Coffee Cola?  Hm, not being a big fan of coffee or espresso I wasn't sure how this was going to taste.  But ya know, I think I liked it a little better than the blood red cola.

エスプレッソコーラー？？？ コーヒーコーラー？　　コーヒーあんまり飲まない僕がこれはどうかなと思い、飲んでみたら、ブラッド・レッド・コーラーのほうよりこれが好きだったかも。

Thrash Domination 2014 / スラッシュ・ドミネーション２０１４

Time to go back a few months.  Actually, all the way back to last Christmas.  I was debating about going to this show but couldn't decide.  Then one day as I came home from work, there on the table in our living room was a small envelope.  The size that a concert ticket fits in.  Yes, my wife being the wife she is, bought the ticket for me as a Christmas present.  I would get to check out the Thrash Domination Tour for the first time.  And just take a look at the line up!  Exodus as headliners.  Voivod (meh, seen them before when they opened for Soundgarden quite a few years back), but Seattle's own - Sanctuary.  I have both of their albums but never did buy any of the Nevermore albums.  And a thrash band from Denmark - Artillery.  Although I would be heading to this concert on my own, I knew a friend of mine would be going as well. 

ちょっと時間を巻き戻し、去年のクリスマスまで。このライブが発表した時凄い迷ってた。行きたいな、でもちょっと高いな。まだ決めづにいたら、ある日うちに帰ったら、テーブルの上に小さな封筒を発見。ライブのチケットが入る位の封筒。開けてみたら、なんと、このライブのチケットが！妻が買ってくれた。私のクリスマスプレゼントでした。見てこのラインアップ。サンフランシスコを代表するExodus! カナダのVoivod! シアトルからSanctuary！ 再結成したSanctuary凄い楽しみにしてた。スラッシュではないけど、正統派のメタルだ。リーダーはなぜNevermoreを解散し、Sanctuaryを再結成したんだろう？あとはデンマークからArtillery！

去年妻からのクリスマスプレゼント。


March rolled around and I was off to Kawasaki's Club Citta.  I went on a Saturday and left a little early so I could grab a bite to eat before checking out the show.  As I was wandering around, one place really caught my eye.  A small craft brewpub called [T.T. Brewery].  What better way to get ready for a thrash show by drinking some craft beers and munching on soe snacks.

クリスマスから３ヶ月後、あっという間にライブの日だ。僕は土曜日の公演にいったのでちょっと早めに出掛けました。ライブ見る前にちょっと軽く食べてくて、川崎のクラブチッタ周辺で探索してみた。ある店がすぐに目に入った。地ビールが提供してる店を発見。「T.T.Brewery」。

And off to the show I go.  Although I went by my lonesome, I knew I would be meeting up with one of my friends there.  I would be watching the show with my awesomely cute and metal-loving friend - Imo Maki (um, that's her nickname).  She's married now but still awesomely cute!  Okay okay, back to the show!  First up - Danish band Artillery!

 

さてさて、ライブにいってまいります。一人で会場に行きましたが、友達と会うのも分かってた。ロックバーで仲良くになった超可愛いこ。外見でこういう子がメタル聴くって感じの子。彼女も結婚してますが、今でもとっても可愛い。はいはい、それはそれで、ライブの始まりだ！最初にステージに立ったのはデンマークのArtillery！

 

 

I wasn't familiar with their music but they put on one helluva show.  I may have to go buy a few of their cds.  Imo Maki (who also loves Finnish metal) knew who these guys were and was the band she was looking forward to seeing.

 

自分はArtilleryの名前は知ってが、音楽はあんまり聴いたことなかった。でも彼らはかっこよこった！いずれは彼らのCDも買う。イモマキ（友達のあだ名）がこのバンドが目当てだったみたい。彼女は北欧凄い好きなんで、フィンランド語も話せる様になった。

Next up was the band I was looking forward to seeing - Seattle's own Sanctuary!  Imo Maki wasn't familiar with their music and didn't know what to expect.  Their music is certainly not thrash but just pure metal.

次にステージに立ったのはシアトル出身のバンドSanctuary。ｲﾓﾏｷは彼らの音楽はあんまり知らなかったみたいで、スラッシュじゃなくて、どう思ったんだろう。

Following Sanctuary were Canadians - Voivod.  However, Imo Maki and I decided to take a break and grabbed a beer (well, I did anyway).  I think we spent almost Voivod's entire set just talking.  We went back to the stage area to catch their encore tune which happened to be the only tune I was familiar with - a cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domini". 

SanctuaryのあとはカナダのバンドVoivod。 このセットはほとんど見てなかった。僕とイモマキは一旦休憩して、ちょっと軽く飲みました（ま、自分はビールタイムでした）。や、ずーとイモマキと話すも楽しい。Voivodのセットが終わる前にステージのほうに戻った。ちょうど最後の曲でした。アンコールもあって、アンコールの曲なんだけど、僕がVoivodで唯一知ってる曲でした。ピンク・フロイドをカバーしてた゛Astronomy Domini"。

The Moriya / ザ・モリヤ

On one of our weekends as we decided to go out for lunch, I remember seeing a television show featuring a nice looking cafe in my neighborhood.  If you didn't know it was there, you would probably not find as it's located in this back alley in Sangenjaya.

週末に外食しようとしたら、テレビで紹介された店を思い出した。僕は結構土曜日で見てる番組「有吉の正直散歩」が自分の近所の三軒茶屋がフィーチャーされて、三茶の裏路地に素敵なカフェがあった。上の写真を見るとここにそういう可愛い店があるのはわからないでしょう。

The name of the small cafe is [The Moriya].  I chose this place because they had souvlaki on the menu.  The curry looked really good too which is what Mikako ordered.

店の名前は「ザ・モリヤ」。僕がここ選んだのはメニューにある料理からです。鉄鍋カレーも美味しそうですか、僕の目当てはスブラキ（ドネルケバッブと似た様なものです）。

Today is Sunday, my wife and I almost always go out on a date on this day.  Today we hopped on a bus and went to Musashi Koyama.  It was lunch time when we got there and we went to this little Italian restaurant near the shotengai called [Carina].

 

今日は日曜日。私たちはこの日で良くデートする日です。今日はうちから都バスに乗って武蔵小山に行って来ました。ついたらちょうど昼食の時間だったので、商店街の近くのイタリアン料理店「カリナ」に行きました。

 

 

I ordered the pasta Genovese.  I love pesto!  Its been a while since I've had some. 

 

僕が注文したのはパスタジェノベーゼ。ペストが大好き！

 

 

Mikako ordered the pasta with shirasu (baby sardines).

 

実香子はしらすと万願寺とうがらしのペペロンチーノ。

 

 

The pasta set is served with a delicious salad with raw ham.

After lunch we walked around for just a little bit but it was too hot today so as the bus back to our neighborhood wouldn't be coming for about a half hour we went to a popular yakitori place and snacked a bit while sharing a nice cold beer!

 

ランチ終わったあと散歩しようと思ったが今日も猛将日で帰ることを決定。でもバスがくるまでちょっと時間があったので、武蔵小山の大人気の焼き鳥屋でつまみ食いしながら超冷えたビールを飲みました。

Japanese Microbrew Tour - Osaka Prefecture / 日本地ビールツアー ー 大阪府

Recently as I did a favor for one of my cousins who lives in Osaka, she paid back the favor by sending me a variety of Osaka Craft Beer, Minoh Beer.  Minoh is also where my aunt and cousins live (even though I haven't visited them in quite a while).  As you can see from the label, Minoh Beer's Stout was awarded Best Imperial Stout for 2013 by the World Beer Awards!  I saved drinking that one for last.

この間、大阪に住んでる再従姉妹の為のあ願いをしてあげたら、お礼に箕面ビールを送ってくれた。自分も何回も箕面に行ったことある。叔母さんと従姉妹が箕面に住んでるからだ！まだ妻は関西に連れてあげてないけどね。僕も何年も関西のほう行ってないな。あっ、箕面ビールのスタウト（一番右にある瓶）はワールド・ビール・アワード２０１３年でインピリアルスタウト部門で見事優勝。それを最後に味わう。

I started off drinking the Minoh Beer with their Pilsner.  Probably the most popular and standard of the four available.

 

最初に飲んだのは人気でスタンダードのピルスナー。

 



The following day, I tried the Pale Ale.  My wife is not a fan of ale but I am and enjoyed this a bit more than the Pilsner.

 

次の日、ペールエールを飲みました。自分の妻はこの味は苦手ですが、僕はピルスナーよりエールのほうが好き。

 

 

 

But what I like even more than ales our weizens.  When I first came to Japan, you couldn't find any.  Now that the beer laws have relaxed a little since then, the Japanese Craft Brewing industry has been growing for the past few years and now it isn't as difficult to find some great tasting weizens.

 

でもエールより好きなのはヴァイツェン。最初に日本に来たとき（もう１９年前になりますが）当時は日本でまったくヴァイツェンという種類のビールは見つかりませんでした。でもこの数年日本の地ビールに関する法律が変わり、作りやすくなりましたおかげで、段々日本地ビール協会は成長してます。地ビール好きのファンなら喜びのことです。今なら結構気軽にヴァイツェンのビールがみつかる様になりました。

 

 

 

Of course I saved the best for last.  I'm a big fan of dark beers.  I like them even better than weizens.  Especially porters and stouts.  And I must say, this was quite delicious.  Its so great knowing that the small craft brewery based in my aunt's neighborhood won this award!

 

もちろん金賞を取ったビールを最後に味わいました。ヴァイツェンより一番好きなのは黒ビールだ。さすが金賞を取ったビールでした。叔母さんが住んでる町、箕面ブルアリーが優勝したのは嬉しいことです！

 

 

But I think Minoh Beer could have put more thought into their labels.  They look so plain.  I wonder why the didn't use the design that they used for their bottlecaps which features a Japanese monkey (which wander around freely near the Minoh Waterfall).

 

でも瓶のラベルがもうちょっと派手のデザインすれば良かったじゃないは僕の意見です。ボトルキャップのデザインもラベルに生かしたほうが良いと思った。箕面の滝に生存する猿のデザインです。

 

 

 







Doraemon in Roppongi Hills / 六本木ヒルズに居るドラえもん

A special post for my sister.  Last Sunday we braved the heat and went to Roppongi Hills.  What drew us there (or mostly me anyway) was the 66 figures of Doraemon that are currently on display.  So, if you're not a Doraemon fan or don't know who or what a Doraemon is, you might want to skip this post.  I bet my sister wish she was in Japan now to check them out.

妹の為のネタ。先週の日曜日、東京は猛暑の日だったんですか、私たちは六本木ヒルズまで出掛けました。理由はただひとつ、今６６体のドラえもんがそこに展示されてる。ドラえもんのファンじゃなければ、今回のネタはつまらないかもしりませんが、国民的なアニメキャラはやっぱり可愛い！僕の妹が大のドラえもんファンだから、多分このネタを見ると羨むかも知りません。

This is the original Doraemon before a rat bit off his ears and made him turn blue.  My wife was surprised I didn't know this bit of Doraemon history.  "And you call yourself a fan?" she asks.  Well, I wouldn't say I was a big fan but how can you not love Doraemon.
