Tokyo Flashback : Tokyo University of Agriculture 124th Annual Harvest Festival and the Rakuichi Rakuza /

One annual event that my wife and I always went to was the Tokyo University of Agriculture's Harvest Festival. Other universities have their Cultural Festivals but because this is an agricultural university, they call their festival the Harvest Festival. The festival is held every year around the beginning of November.

The entrance to Tokyo University of Agriculture. There is a new design every year which is always fun to check out.

Here we are walking around on campus.

Of course the reason why we go every year is to eat the foods made by various international students.

Our first taste of international cuisine will be some momo from Nepal. It's a Nepal-style steamed gyoza.

This booth was selling some Indonesian style chicken skewers called satay which are topped with a peanut sauce.

Another fun thing to check out at the festival are the variety of handmade mikoshi or portable shrines.

Physeter catadon? I had to look it up. It's the scientific name for the sperm whale.

Frog king?

Saiyuki, the Monkey King.

The dragon motif is always popular.

I thought this one was pretty cute.

This one is very impressive too.

Back in line for more food. We are going to try something called hirayachi. It's an Okinawan dish best described as an Okinawa-style okonomiyaki (pancake) but I think it more closely resembles the Korean chijimi.

I found a kyoudo ryouri (local cuisine) website that defines hirayachi as a:  thin savor pan cake with chinese chive, leeks, tuna in flour and water mix and is eaten with Worcester sauce. It is very popular and easy to make at home. In the past, when Okinawa was hit by the Typhoon, people used to make this at home with whatever the ingredients they had at home and still this day, there are some area that people eat Hirayachi on the typhoon days. The name Hirayachi comes from “Hirayaki (flat pan cake) but with Okinawan dialect.

On the same weekend as Tokyo Nodai's Harvest Festival, at the Setagaya station on the Setagaya line, a different festival was being held, the Rakuichi Rakuza. It's also a festival featuring food, fun, and games.

It's more like a farmer's market than a festival though.

Craft beer from Ishikawa Prefecture. Hakusan Waku Waku Beer.

Small size okonomiyaki. One for me and one for my wife.

My last snack of the day. I think it's a sata andagi from Okinawa.

Of course this would be the last year we would enjoy  the Tokyo University of Agriculture Harvest Festival and the Rakuichi Rakuten as we would move to Aomori City the following year in November.

When my wife and I lived in Sangenjaya in Tokyo, one of the events we looked forward to seeing was the Street Performers Festival, usually held on the second weekend of October. This year's festival was held on October 17 and 18. On Saturday, the festivities started from noon and ended at 7:00pm. It ended at 6:00pm on Sunday. My wife was working in the day so I ventured out on my own. She would join me later on in the evening.

I first saw a couple of animal marionettes.

I went to the NTT Square to check out Performer SYO.

Oh, and the great thing about festivals is the food!

Nothing like a little meat assortment to put a smile on my face.

A very tall couple!

Hey, I made a new friend.

Hey, it's the tall couple again. We saw them dancing together at night. The couple are called Stiltango consisting of nanisole and MEI. Their name probably comes from doing the tango on stilts.

The name of this performer is Meet Pete. He is a tightrope walker.

My wife and I both have Sundays off, so we enjoyed the Street Performers Festival together on this day.

This performer's name is Bald Yamada. He was pretty freaky-lookin'.

You can check out some street art as well.

And there are many walking performers as well.

Unfortunately, this would be the last Street Performers Festival we would see as we would move to Aomori the following year.
