Pepsi flavored Cheetos / シュワ シュワ コーラ味

I know my American friends will take one look at this and say, "WTF????".  I had been searching for them but it was my sister who was on vacation here in Tokyo who found them and graciously gave me a package.  My sister said it wasn't too bad.  So, with a bit of trepidation, I opened the packaged and took my first bite!   Auuuugh!!!!  What is this?  Definitely WTF!  But it really does taste like cola.  By the way, this doesn't actually say Cheetos on the package.  It says [Shuwa Shuwa Cola].  Japanese love their onomatopoeia.  Shuwa Shuwa is the term for bubbling carbonation.  I thought it was awful.  One of the worst tasting snacks I've ever encountered and I've encountered some real winners.  Of course I didn't finish it at one sitting and my wife didn't even bother to experiment.  But you know what, the second time I was snacking on them while watching a movie, I found that it wasn't as bad as I first thought.  I won't say it was good though and if I had other snacks at home, well, this wouldn't have been my first choice.  Anyway, leave it to Pepsi to come up with interesting marketing ideas.  Probably available for a limited time only, so if your the adventurous type, eat at your own risk.

アメリカ人の友達がこれを見ると絶対、”ハァー？”という位驚くでしょう。なにそれ？自分は探してたけど見つかったのは日本でバカンス中の妹でした。妹から一袋貰いました。結構イケルよと妹も言う。勇気を出して、袋を開け、食べてみた。うわ～、本当になにこれって感じ。こんな不味いお菓子初めてだ。今まで体験した怪しいお菓子でこれがトップになったかも。びっくりなのは本当にコーラ味でシュワシュワ感がある。もちろん全部は食べられませんでした。自分の妻も体験拒否。とっても不思議なお菓子です。まだ残りがあったので、翌日映画を観ながらまたこれを食べてみた。うん？あれ？最初に食べた時と違う、イケルかも知らない。ま、他のお菓子がなかったせいかも知りませんが、二回目を食べたら本当に悪くないなと思った。ペップシは良く面白い商品を開発するんだな。多分これは期間限定販売と思うので、見つかったら、是非チャレンジしてみて。

Okay, if its weird enough, you know I have to try it.  I had been looking for these but it was my sister who was on vacation here in Japan who found them and she bequethed one pack to me.  She bought a mess load of these to take home as souvenirs to the States.  My sister said they were actually pretty good.  I finally decided to open up my package yesterday and give it the taste test.  The result?  This is one of the most awful tasting snacks I've tried in a long time.  The durian chips I bought from Thailand taste better than this.  My sister is crazy for thinking these taste good.  But hey, it really does have that cola flavor and when you bite into one, it gives off a fizzy reaction.  It is weird but in my opinion - they're still awful!

アメリカには絶対あり得ない味と思う。噂は聞いたが自分も探してみたが、見つからなかった。自分の妹がバカンスで日本に来て、どっかの店で発見。僕に一つを譲ってくれました。妹は大量に買った。アメリカの友達に配る日本お土産で。妹は僕より試食してみて、僕に、”いけるよ、これ”。昨日か一昨日、貰ったやつを開けて食べてみた。私の感想？ 確かにシュワシュワするし、本当にコーラ味もする。でもスナックとしては超不味い！ 妹よ、なに考えてるの？ 信じられない位不味いですよ、これ。まだ半分以上は残ってるな。食べられかな？そんなに不味いなら食べなくて良いと妻にも言われたが、やっぱり妹から貰ったものなんで。でもやっぱりブログネタには最適！

The Tai Yaki

When you think of tai-yaki, it usually means sweets. A fluffy bun in the shape of a fish filled with azuki, chocolate, or cream. What makes this place different isn't the shape of the tai yaki, it's what the put into it. And it isn't fluffy. As you can see from the sign, it says crispy hot sandwich. It's located on Senta Gai in Shibuya. Although the menu shows six different tai-yakis, there are actually seven. I don't know how often the menu changes, but tried all seven that are on the current menu. That's not true, I just noticed the chocolate custard on the menu. When I had the chocolate, it was chocolate almond.

たい焼きと言えば甘いおやつですね。もちもちした鯛の形の中に小豆やカスタード、チョコなどが入って。でもここは違う。もちもちしてない。クリスピーで中の具も変わってる。カレーチーズドッグ、イタリアン、ジャーマンポテト、スイートポテト、キャラメルアーモンド。場所は渋谷のセンタ街にある。メニューはどれくらい変わるか分かりませんが、僕は全部食べ比べた。一揆じゃないですよ。ちょっと時間をかけて、やっと全種類を食べた。でもチョコカスタードじゃなくて、チョコアーモンドにメニューが変わったの気付きました。

Veggie Donuts? / 野菜のドーナッツ？

There is a small dessert shop in Nakameguro called "Potager" that specializes in sweets made with vegetables. Now they've taken things a step further by selling some of their products in neighborhood convenience stores. I tried there spinach donut holes and burdock root donut. The donut holes were okay, but I preferred the burdock root donut. Healthy donuts with fewer calories, can't beat that.

中目黒にある「ポタージェ」とゆう店は野菜を使ったデザートを提供してる店。今度は中目まで行けなくても、「ポタージェ」のスイーツが近くのコンビニで買える様になった。僕が買ったのはほうれん草のボールドーナッツとごぼうのチョコファッション。この二種類なら僕はごぼうの方は好きでした。

The King of Fruits - durian is now available in a Starbust-like snack. Give it a try - no worries, it does not have the odor of the regular fruit.

Curry Croquettes / カレーコロッケ

Being a lover of curry and croquettes as well, I had to try these two different types of curry croquettes that were available at our local supermarket. The one on the left is the Yokosuka Navy Curry Croquette and the one on the right is the Tsuchiura Zeppelin Curry Croquette.

The Yokosuka curry was a little spicy while the zeppelin curry had a mild curry flavor.

カレーとコロッケ好きな僕なので、うちの近所のスーパーに横須賀海軍カレーコロッケと土浦ツェッペリンカレーコロッケ。横須賀海軍のほうがちょっとピリ辛で、僕好み。土浦のほうは薄味のカレー。

Mini Burgers? / ミニバーガー？

Ooh, two burgers and some fries. But don't they look a little small? That's because they're really mini donuts made to look like burgers. It's a collaborative effort between Japanese burger chain Mos Burger and donut chain Mr. Donut. I will eventually have to check out the donut burger at Mos Burger.

おおう、バーガーとポテトフライだ。でも、何か小さくない？それは本物のバーガーじゃなくて、バーガーの形のお菓子です。モスバーガーとミスタ・ドーナッツのコラボ商品です。いずれはモスバーガーのドーナッツバーガーを食べに行くべきだな。

Our friend Ayaka went to Hawaii and brought us back some Hawaiian snacks - well okay, the whoppers aren't really Hawaiian but they are American! I loved those Reeses peanut butter flavored Whoppers.

友達のあやこが旅に出て、ハワイに行った。帰国後にハワイお土産貰いました‐ま、「ウァッパーズ」はハワイアンじゃないですが、超アメリカン！あのピーナッツバター味のやつが最高。

Birthday snacks from Tochigi Prefecture for me and Mikako from my friend Ayako. My brother would probably love the gyoza-flavored rice crackers pictured on the bottom left. Sazae-san cookies on top of the box and lemon-milk cookies, which are quite delicious.

僕と美香子が友達のあやこから誕生日の為にもらった栃木県限定お菓子。自分の兄貴は絶対あの宇都宮餃子せんべいが食べたくなるだろう。上にはサザエさんクッキー。レモン牛乳クッキーも超ウマイ！

誕生日で貰ったおつまみ。

From my mother-in-law, Oirase Yogurt drink from Aomori Prefecture. I love this. I think it tastes much better than my brother's favorite Japanese yogurt drink - Yakult.

義理のお母さんから。奥入瀬のむヨーグルト。これ大好き。自分の兄貴が好きなヤクルトより旨いと思う。

And from one of my co-workers. One of my favorite American snacks. These go great with beer! They come in more flavors but these are my favorites.

同僚から貰ったアメリカのお菓子。これも僕が大好きなお菓子。いろんな味がありますが、やっぱりハラペーニョとハニームスタードが最高！ビールとおつまみにもってこいものです。

Double Pepper Cheese Snack / くちどけチーズたら

Mikako isn't a big fan of cheese but I am and I couldn't resist trying this double pepper cheese snack. Great with beer too.

美香子はチーズそんなに好きじゃないですが、僕は大好きなので、このスナック発見した時は買うしかないと思った。ビールのおつまみにもってこいですよ。

What's the difference you ask? Look closely. You will see that one is chili flavored drops while the other is curry. And they're both very spicy. I just love the package design.

何が違うって？よーく見て。一つは唐辛子味、もう一つは激辛カレー。両方は辛いよ！！パッケジデザインが最高！

Chinatown Snacks / 中華街で買っ飴

The Panda Drops are bamboo grass flavored hard candy. The drops in the red can are anin-dofu (sweet tofu) flavored drops. Mikako and I found the Panda Drops to taste better than the an-nin drops even though we both love an-nin dofu.


中華街で買った飴。パンダドロップスは笹味で、他は杏仁味です。僕と美香子は杏仁の味よりパンダドロップのほうが美味しいと思った。普通の杏仁豆腐は大好きですけど。

Pino Lucky Piece / PINO で当たり

PINO ice cream cups comes in a package of six. It's been said that if you there is one shaped like a star, it's a lucky cup and you get to make a wish before eating it.

期間限定スナック / Limited Time Snack

Check this out, green tea chocolate with omochi. Available for only a limited time. I only bought a few today. If I were to buy a box (45 pieces to a box), Mikako would most likely eat them all in one night!!

今日これ４個買いました。４５個入りの箱を買うと、美香子が一晩で全部食べる可能性があるので。
