Tokyo Flashback : A Walk around Daita Hachiman Shrine / 東京フラッシュバック：代田八幡神社の散歩

One Saturday in June of 2015 while my wife was working, I decided to check out one of the shrines located not so far away from our apartment. All I had to do was walk up Kannana Dori for about twenty-minutes and I would reach my destination. I wanted to check out the Daita Hachiman Shrine. 

２０１５年６月の土曜日妻がバイトしてる間自分はうちの近くにある神社を探索しようと思った。環七線沿いを２０分くらい歩けば自分の目的地にたどり着く。探索するのは代田八幡神社。

This is the torii to Daita Hachiman Shrine.

There are usually two komainu (guardian dogs) set a little before the entrance of the honden.

Daita Hachiman Shrine was built in 1591. This is the honden.

代田八幡神社は天正１９（１５９１）年に創設された。こちらが代田八幡神社の本殿。

Votive boards / 絵馬

Most of the wishes are pretty standard - wishing for health and happiness for the family, passing a university exam, making good memories and so on but one of the wishes just stood out. Perhaps you noticed an illustration on one of the prayer boards. One that looks like a famous celebrity. 

時間があったんのでいろんな人が絵馬で書いた願い事を読んでみた。ほぼ家族の健康や大雅楽合格、素敵な思い出等が書いてあるが、一つ気になってた絵馬があった。ある有名人の顔も描いてるもの気づきました？

This person is a huge Michael Jackson fan. The person's wish is to meet the King of Pop. 

この人は大のマイケル・ジャクソンファンですね。マイケルが会えるようにお願いしてる。

I thought this was pretty unusual. There were two water-purifcation basins on the shrine grounds. 

これはなんか変わったと思った。境内に二つの手水舎があった。

And of course I got my Daita Hachiman Shrine Seal. 

もちろん代田八幡神社の御朱印をゲットしました。
