English Conversation and Burgers at Fire House / バーガー屋のファイヤーハウスで英会話

Another month rolled around and it was time to hang out with a couple of my friends and try to teach them a bit of English.  We have been doing this every month since last December.  The last few times, I would pick a gourmet burger shop.  I told them our class doesn't have to be at a burger shop but they told me that they enjoyed the places I've picked.  This time around, I decided we would have our extremely informal class at Fire House in Hongo Sancho Me near Tokyo University.  Here we are waiting for a table as there was about a 30 minute wait.

毎月二人の友達を軽い英会話講座をやってます。去年の１２月から始まりもうはや一年が経ちます。いつも僕がグルメバーがショップを選んで、二時間程度で英会話をやってます。バーガー屋にこどわってるわけじゃないけど、二人がこういう時にしかバーが屋が行かないから楽しいと言ってくれた。今回選んだばーガーショップは本郷三丁目にある「ファイヤー ハウス」。東京大学の近くにある。上記の写真はテーブルの３０分待ちでした。

It was a rainy day but since we would be inside a building it didn't matter to us that much.  I actually took this picture after we had finished eating.

今日の日は雨でした。でもビルの中で英会話をするが、私たちは天気を気にしませんでした。

I think this was the best table in the place.  Located at the back of the shop.  The menu is located on the bookshelf as well.  That sideways looking tie thing.

個人的に一番良いテーブルに座れた。棚にタイらしきものはこの店のメニュー。

Just one page of the menu.  I decided on the Avocadion Burger (not to be confused with the Avocado Burger) as the Avocadion is topped with guacamole and not avocado.  My friend Ryoko chose the Mozzarella Mushroom Burger (that was what I ordered the first time I came here).  While our friend Yukie ordered the Applerella Burger.  This would be an apple burger (which is made with cooked apple) and topped with Mozzarella cheese.

メニューの一部です。僕が注文したのはアボカディオンバーガー。これはアボカドバーガーと違ってアボカドではなくワカモレが入ってます。ワカモレはアボカドのディップですよ。友達の涼子ちゃんは僕がこの店で初めて来た時のバーガーを注文、モッツァレラマッシュルームバーガー。そして私たちの友達のゆきえが選んだのはアップレラバーガー。これは当店のアップルバーガーにモッツァレラチーズ。前も気になってが、やっぱりバーガーに甘いものはどうかなって、ゆきえに聞いたら、美味しいと言ってた。

And so ended our class.  Afterwards we headed towards the Tokyo Dome to look for a book store to choose our next text that we would use (the current one was too simple and we had already gone through all the phrases introduced in it).  Next class will be at Grill Burger Club [Sasa] in Daikanyama.  This is close to the very large Tsutaya book shop so we should find a decent book there to use for future classes.

そして、今回の英会話講座が終了しました。その後東京ドームのほうに行って、本屋を探しました。現在使われてるテキストが簡単すぎで、この一年でその本に紹介されたフレーズは全部達成で次使うテクストを探しに。見つからなかったが、次の英会話講座は代官山にあるグリルバーガー「ササ」に決定。そこが蔦屋の大きな本屋の近くで、そこでもっと良いテキストがみつかるはず。

Setagaya Raku Ichi Raku Za / 世田谷 楽市楽座

Leaving Tokyo University of Agriculture's Harvest Festival, we walked our way to Setagaya station where a different event was taking place.  The raku ichi raku za (this can be described as part flea market, part food festival, and part street fair all rolled into one).  As you can see, it was as crowded as the University and they actually had more food items I wanted to eat.

東京農業大学を去り、世田谷液まで歩いた。そこにまた別のイベント開催中。楽市楽座。 近所の祭りなので、農大より混んでません。こちで自分が食べたい物もがもっとあった。

I was actually looking for some of these at the Harvest Festival.  An Okinawan snack called sata　andagi (which are sweet deep fried buns) similar to doughnuts.  Mikako remembered that these were sold at this event.  And only 100 yen for one!

農大でこれを探してた。沖縄を代表するスイーツ、サーターアンダギー。僕はこれが大好きなんで。美香子が楽市楽座で売ってると覚えってた。それにしても、一個なんと百円！

One booth run by a couple of Indians and selling Indian food also had two large coolers of beers from around the world.  One of the guys mentioned that they had "Troper".  I had never heard of it.  But then he said something about Iron Maiden.  And then it hit me!  Ah, I think he means "Trooper".  And sure enough, at this local festival I found me a bottle of Iron Maiden's Trooper beer!

インド人がやって屋台で声をかけられた。インド料理も好きでけど、ここの屋台が世界のビールも提供してた。一人のインド人が僕に゛トロッパ”あるよと言ったけど、どこのビールがさっぱりわからない。でもそのあとかれがなぜかイギリスのヘビメタバンドのアイアン・メイデンの話をしてた。そこで気づいた。もしかして、ここでアイアン・メイデンの゛トルーパー”ビールがあるのか。珍しくあった！

The empty bottle has now found a home next to my autographed print of Maiden's "X-Factor" which was given to me a the former manager of the former Tower Books in Singapore.

空の瓶が新しいホームに飾ってます。僕は元タワーブックスシンガポール店の元店長からいただいたアイアン・メイデンの「X-Factor」全メンバーのサイン入りプリント（ブルースじゃなく、ブレーズのサインですが）と一緒です。

And of course we ordered some tandoori chicken skewers.

そしてタンドリーチキンの串焼きを購入。

But these looked really good too and the smell was awesome.  Gai yang it was.  Thai styled grilled chicken.  It tasted awesome too.

これも美味しそうに見えた。ガイヤーン（タイ風のグリルチキン）。香りも良いし、とっても美味しかったよ。

 

 

I saw this at the same booth.  This looked really good so we bought some of this too.  Moroccan cous-cous.

After finishing my Trooper beer with some gai yang and cous-cous we were about to head home when Mikako decided to have some yakitori.

メイデンビール飲んだあとだったし、ガイヤーンとクスクスも食べ終わってそろそろ帰ろうとしたら、美香子が焼き食べたいと言い出し、僕もそれも好きだし、やきとりの食べた。

And with the Setagaya Line right nearby, going home was a breeze.  And so ended another fun-filled day.

世田谷線の乗り場も近くて便利。すぐ帰れた。こして、楽しい一日が終了しました。

Tokyo University of Agriculture's 123rd annual Harvest Festival / 東京農業大学 第１２３収穫祭

Its that time of year again.  My wife and I have been going to Tokyo University of Agriculture's Harvest Festival every since we've been married.  Unlike other universities that have their gakuen-sai (University Festival), Tokyo University of Agriculture (Nodai for short) has a Harvest Festival.  As with the food festivals held at Yoyogi Park, this event has become popular and seems to get even more crowded every year as well.  Still, that doesn't stop us from going.

この時期がまたやってきました。東京農業大学の第１２３収穫祭。他の大学と違って、学園祭ではなく、農業の大学なので収穫祭が開催される。私たちはもう毎年行ってます。代々木公園で開催するタイフェスやナマステインディアと同じく、人気が上昇して毎年凄く込むようになった。それでも私たちは行く。

At least there seems to be more space to relax and eat.  We went to the university grounds around noon so a lot of the popular food booths had extremely long lines. 

今年は座って食べる場所が去年より広がってる感じ。昼に着いたら、人気の屋台の前には超行列が出来てた。

This year this was all we ate at the Harvest Festival.  There didn't seem to be as many foreign students as previous years and there wasn't really interesting food items at the other booths.  But we already knew there was another festival going on nearby.  After walking around a bit more, we headed over to Setagaya to check out the raku ichi raku za (which is part flea market, part farmer's market, and part street fair all rolled into one).

 

今年の収穫祭で食べたいものはあんまりなかった。なんだか留学生も少なくなった感じ。別の場所に楽市楽座も開催してると分かってたので、ここをあとちょっと探索したら、世田谷駅まで歩いた。

 

 

But before we left the university grounds, we checked out the portable shrines made by students.

Afuri / 阿夫利

I think its about time I wrote about another ramen shop.  This one opened in my neighborhood of Sangenjaya sometime last year and I finally got around to going there a few months ago.  The name of the shop is [Afuri].  This ramen shop has grown over the last few years and I imagine they will be opening more in the near future.  I decided to try something called the yuzu rata-men. 

またまた新しいラーメン屋のネタです。こちらの店は去年位に三軒茶屋に出店。「阿夫利」です。何回も店の前を通ったが、やっとここでランチを食べることにした。メニューに気になったのは柚子らーたん麺。

Now, doesn't that look delicious?  A spicy sweet broth.  Medium size noodles.  Topped with charshu, poached egg, nori, onions, and some other stuff.  I think I will be going here again some time soon.

美味しそうでしょう？ 甘辛のつゆうに、ちゃんと柚子の香りもする。トッピングが叉焼、味付け卵、海苔、など。麺も良い。また行くたくなるラーメン屋です。

Back in Tokyo / 東京に戻りました

５年ぶりに里帰りしたとき、朝にうちの庭にこうお客様が現れた。


Just a note to let you my readers know that I am back in Tokyo and have plans to write more posts in the near future.  I have decided not to write about my recent trip home on my blog.  I took so many pictures its taking me a long time to organize them.

無事日本に帰りました。近々いろんなネタを書き込みます。今回の里帰りのネタは個人ブログに書かないことしました。写真が取りすぎて、写真の整理するのが結構時間かかってます。

Tokyo Ramen Street [Kizo] / 東京ラーメンストレート 「㐂蔵（きぞう）」

On Sunday, the wife and I went to Tokyo Station to do a little souvenir shopping before heading back to the States at the end of this week.  There is a small shop that carries all the limited edition flavors of Kit-Kats that you can't find in the States.  We figured that would be a nice little gift for everybody to try at the barbecue we plan on having at my parent's place this coming Saturday.  Unfortunately, when we went, the shop only carried one flavor.  We decided that we would pick them up at the airport instead.  But as we were at Tokyo Station, we decided to have lunch there as well.  We decided to brave the always crowded and ever so popular Tokyo Ramen Street.  Amazingly, when we went, it was as crowded as we thought it would be.  We chose a place called [Kizo].  Their specialty is a beef tongue scallion salt ramen.  That would mean a salt-based broth, with scallions and beef tongue of course.  Mikako ordered the regular specialty ramen while I ordered the specialty with all the toppings which included half-poached eggs and kikurage. As this is a salt-based broth ramen, it was really light.  The ramen noodles were medium sized, not too thick, not too thin, and the beef tongue, well, it isn't char-shu! 

昨日の日曜日、僕と妻は今週末アメリカに帰るまえに東京駅でちょっとした買い物に出かけました。東京駅に小さなお土産産があって、その店が日本にしか手に入らないキット・キャットの限定味が全部揃えてます。土曜日にアメリカの実家でホームパーティを実施するので、みんながこういうキット・キャットがあるのは珍しいと思って、面白いかな。でも残念ながら、今日あったのは一つの味だけ、紫芋。それだったら、成田空港で買ったほうが好いかな。丁度駅に行ったときは昼食の時間。たぶん混んでると予想しましたが、とりあえず東京駅一番街にある東京ラーメンストリートに行ってみた。今日も珍しくそうなんい混んでなかった。選んだラーメン屋は「「㐂蔵（きぞう）」。この店の名物は牛タンねぎ塩ラーメン。美香子はそれを注文、僕は牛タンねぎ塩ラーメン、全部乗せを注文。全部のせは味付け卵ときくらげも乗ってます。塩ラーメンなので結構あっさり系。叉焼ではなく牛タン。最高に美味しかった。
