Wakabayashi Inari Jinja / 若林稲荷神社

This is the shrine that's located behind our apartment.  A very small Inari Shrine but quite picturesque in a suburban neighborhood.

この神社はうちのアパートの裏にある小さな稲荷神社です。小さいですけどやっぱり綺麗です。

Must wash your hands before paying your respect.


お参りする前に必ずお手を洗うのが常識です。

Off to the left of the main shrine is a small temple to Daikokuten (one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods of Fortune), often described as the God of Wealth, Commerce and Trade.

Cafe Place Jaune / カフェ・プラス・ジョーヌ

While I was wandering around my old neighborhood, I decided to have lunch there as well.  This place looked interesting.  It must be fairly new as I remember this place to be one of those local shops that sold a bit of everything.  Its where I bought a dresser, some dishes, a footstool, book shelves, and assorted items here.  And now its a little cafe with a French theme.

旧近所を散歩したら、ここのカフェ、「カフェ・プラス・ジョーヌ」を発見。結構新しい店だな。僕がまだ三宿に住んでた頃、このビルは近所の生活屋でした。当時箪笥や茶碗、脚立、本棚などここで買いました。フランス風のカフェに変わるとはね。

I treated myself to a ham and cheese with salsa sandwich.

ランチはハムとチーズにサルサソースのホットサンドを食べた。

Mishuku Jinja / 三宿神社

This is the neighborhood shrine of my old place.  Mishuku Jinja.  I had lived in Mishuku for ten years but it wasn't until my seventh year of living here that I even knew this place existed.  I guess I wasn't much for walking back then.  The stone pillar on the left shows the name of the shrine, "Mishuku Jinja" while the pillar on the right provides the name of the God that resides here, "Bishamonten" - one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan.

旧近所の近くにある神社、「三宿神社」です。三宿に１０年間も住んでたのに、この神社が存在してるのは住んで七年目位からやっと発見。やっぱり昔はそんなにあちこち散歩してなかったな。神社の入り口に社号標があります。左は神社名、右は御祭神です。ここは毘沙門天だ。

It is not known when this shrine was built but estimated to be around the beginning of the Meiji Era.  You can find more detailed information on the shrine at the URL listed below.

Unfortunately, it is entirely in Japanese and I could not translate the page in its entirety.  For the size of a neighborhood shrine, its amazing that I hadn't discovered it earlier.

A Walk around My Old Neighborhood / 旧近所の散歩

A couple of months ago, before I broke my wrist, I decided to take a walk around my old neighborhood.  When I first moved to Japan and looked for an apartment, I wanted a place that was within thirty minutes of my work place.  I chose an area called Mishuku which became my home for the next ten years before I got married.

二か月前、手首骨折する前に、自分が昔住んでた近所を久しぶりに散歩しました。日本に移住して、アパートを探す時、仕事場から３０分以内の所を希望したの。そして決めたのは世田谷区三宿。その後１０年間も三宿に住みました。結婚してから、引っ越しました。

My first apartment - "White Heights".  It was located behind the Setagaya High School in a very quiet neighborhood.

日本で最初に住んでたアパート、三宿にある“ホワイト・ハイツ”、世田谷学園の裏にある。凄い静かな所でした。

My neighborhood convenience store.  I practically lived here as well.  I don't think there was a day gone by that I didn't come here to buy lunch or dinner or snacks or drinks or beer, etc.

近所のコンビニ。ここはうちの台所みたいな場所だったな。１０年間毎日ここに来ました。うちでほとんど料理作ってなくて、外食以外はほとんどコンビニ弁当。もちろんビールや飲み物、生活用品もここで買いました。

I never got around to buying a washing machine at my first apartment and always came to this coin laundry (door on the right).  Actually this was my second choice until the first coin laundry place I used burned down.  Also, from time to time I would treat myself to the sento (public bath), the door on the left.  It was a nice to wind down and relax.

三宿アパート時代洗濯機は買ってなかった為いつもこのコインランドリーで済ました （右側のドア）。本当はもう一か所のコインランドリーがありましたが、そこが火事になって、こちがメインになった。たまにはときわ湯という銭湯（左側のドア）でリラックスしましたな。

I also spent a lot of time in the basement of this building which was a 2 minute walk from my apartment.  This is where the rock bar "Blackmore" was located.  There were many a nights when I would be here until morning, drinking and listening to hard rock and heavy metal.  My first onsen trip was with the friends that I made at Blackmore.

この建物も凄い世話になりましたな。自分のアパートから徒歩２分にある。地下にロックバー「ブラクモア」があった場所です。何回もそこのバーで音楽聴きながら朝まで飲んでた思い出の場所です。僕の初の温泉旅行もブラクモアで仲良くなった友達と一緒に行きました。

Blackmore changed management and the name was changed to "Black".  I haven't been here since the change.

ブラクモアのマスターも変わって、名前まで変わって、その後、ここは一度も行った事ない。

If I felt in a mood to splurge on lunch or dinner, I would come here to "Zest", a Tex-Mex restaurant.  The building used to be a brighter shade of yellow.

ちょっと贅沢したい時にここでランチが夕飯に行った。「ゼスト」。メキシカン料理店です。昔このビルの色は黄色だった。

Another place I spent a lot of time at as this beef bowl restaurant is opened 24 hours a day.  Their curry is quite delicious too.

ここも良くお世話になりました。牛丼の店「松屋」。２４時間営業が魅力で。もちろん松屋のカレーも美味しい。

On the other corner, there used to be another beef bowl shop - Yoshinoya.

向かいの角に昔は牛丼の店「吉野家」もありました。いつの間にかなくなった。

Hakata Tenjin / 博多天神

And even more food posts.  It's been a short while since I featured a ramen shop and I can't believe I haven't featured this one before.  I used to go to the Shibuya branch quite often.  Yes, this a chain shop that specializes in tonkotsu ramen, the pork based soup broth that originated in Kyushu.  The shop only serves tonkotsu ramen but you can order a variety of it from the plain ramen to my favorite - nori ramen.  There are spices you can add set on the counter as well.  I always add a dab of garlic, along with some other toppings.  I don't know if this was an every day service at this branch, but the sign out front said your first kaedama (extra noodles) was free.  Of course I ordered an extra plate - it was free after all.

食べ物のネタがまだまだつづく。このラーメン屋がまだ紹介してなかったのは自分でも不思議と思う。昔渋谷店に良く行ったラーメン屋です。大体呑みの帰りだったな。これチェイン店の「博多天神」。とんこつラーメンの店です。僕はここに来ると必ず注文するのはのりラーメン。そしてにんにくを大量に入れる。いつものサービスか分かりませんが、今日行った時、最初の替玉は無料。もちろん頼みましたよ。無料ですもの。

Nha Viet Nam / ニャー ヴェトナム

And yet another food post.  My friends and I went to this Vietnamese restaurant located in the PARCO department store after our hanami. We were going to go to one of our usual places - La Boheme but that place was crowded and we didn't want to wait.  Okay, the food here wasn't bad - it just didn't seem particularly Vietnamese.  Nothing hot and spicy, no overt scent of fish sauce, even the bahn xeo tasted rather bland (or it could be the fact that I'm not a big fan of bean sprouts which this has a lot of). This seems to be one of those ethnic restaurants that adjust the flavor for the Japanese appetite.  We also had some stir-fried veggies and sauteed beef and garlic tops (which I rather enjoyed).

食べ物ネタがつづく。花見がおわってから行ったベトナム料理店「ニャー ヴェトナム」渋谷PARCO店。いつもののパターンなら渋谷の「ラ・ボエム」に行くはずですが、この日、ボエムは凄い込んでて、待ち時間もちょっと長すぎるから、別の店を選んだ。料理は良かったけどなんだかベトナム料理という感じはしなかった。多分日本人に合わせる様な味で提供してるベトナム料理かも。辛さも足りないし、ナンプラの香りもない、たのだバインセオも普通（ま、自分はもやしそんなに好きじゃないので、ここのバインセオはもやしのオムレットみたいな感じだった。

Chou-san Papa / 趙（ちょう）さんパパ

After my wrist surgery, I went shopping with Mikako in Shimokitazawa.  It was lunch time and we were planning on going to the one coin Korean shop, but it was crowded so we decided to wander a bit.  Right across the street from the Korean place, was this small Chinese eatery which specializes in xiaolongbao (steamed soup dumplings seem to be the closest translation).  The place wasn't crowded and the set menu looked promising - xiaolongbao with pork, chicken ramen and zha cai  (a type of pickled mustard plant according to Wikipedia).

手首の手術の一週間後、嫁と一緒に下北沢に買い物に出かけた。下北に着いた時はちょうど昼食の時間だったので、ワン・コインの韓国料理店行こうとしてたんですが、店が込んでて、諦めた。どこでランチ食べようと迷いましたが、韓国の店の向かいに「趙さんパパ」という中華の店がありました。サインを読むとこの店は小籠包の専門店。セットメニューも良さそうだったし、私たちはBセットを注文しました。Bセットは小籠包４個、ザーサイと鶏ラーメン。

上記のランチメニューが読みにくいかも知りませんので、ここで書き込みます。一番右から、「世界一美味しい小籠包とヘルシーな野菜料理を食べて下さい」。 自信たっぷりある店ですね。

「小籠包は上海が本場。上海の小籠包のうまさは中国中をかけめぐり、全国的な点心となりました。しかしまがいものが多く、本場に出会うことはほとんどありません。うまさでは断トツにに上海の小籠包です。

趙さんパパは本当の本場。上海の小籠包を日本中に広めていうと開店した店です。そしてもう一つ、中国語では料理のことを菜と呼びます。家庭料理は家常菜。四川料理は四川菜。上海料理は上海菜と呼びます。要するに、中国料理の中心は野菜なのです。趙さんパパのもう一つの使命は野菜料理を広めるｋとです。」

The restaurant also provides an illustrated guide on how to properly eat your xiaolongbao. Step 1 - lightly dip your xiaolongbao into the vinegar dip.  Step 2 - place your xiaolongbao on the renge (spoon) and take a small bite at the top to create a hole.  Step 3 - first, enjoy the soup inside the xiaolongbao.  Step 4 - place ginger on top of your xiaolongbao and enjoy!  The xiaolongbao is best enjoyed hot, but be careful not to burn your mouth.

小籠包の美味しい食べ方も親切にテーブルの上の説明書みたいなものが置いてます。注意頃も可愛いね。「やけどに気をつけてね。」と書いてある。

I'm kind of glad the Korean place was crowded or we may have never discovered this place.  The  xiaolongbao was delicious and juicy.  Love the soup.  I think I may prefer xiaolongbao over gyoza (sacrilege to my brother perhaps but then again, he probably hasn't had a Shanghai style xiaolongbao.)  The chicken ramen was delicious as well.  Served in a chicken broth with minced chicken.  And me mustn't forget the zha cai.  All very healthy.

韓国料理店が込んでて良かったかも。そじゃなければ、この店には行ってなかったかも。小籠包
がめちゃうまかったし、鶏らーめんもあっさりで優し味。僕はもしかして餃子より小籠包のほうが好きかも （俺の兄貴は悲しむかもでも上海小籠包食べたことないだろ）。ザーサイも忘れずに、全部が美味しかった。
