Lunch Break Walk /

Chinju Bridge /

Whenever I'm between books or have no books to read during my lunch hour, and providing the weather is nice, I take short walks around my work neighborhood. I discovered another of Shinagawa Ward's 100 Scenic Spots. "The View of Ebara Shrine from the Chinju Bridge".

But all too soon, lunch hour is over and its back to work.

What Line is This?

A couple of weeks ago as I was headed home from work, my usual train wasn't its usual colors. It was entirely brown. I did a double-take thinking I was on the wrong platform. But no, it was the right train. Meiji Chocolate collaborated with the Yamanote Line to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its naming. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the standard color of the Yamanote Line, it is Green and Gray.

Ern's Monthly Visual Victuals (August 2009) /

Okay, so I'm a little late with my latest film reviews but I finally got around to writing them. I was also thinking of adding the films I watched in September but then I would have to include all those I saw on the plane to and from the States. So, I will write the September reviews separately. I think half of this months films I watched on tv and have previously reviewed. Enjoy.

ゲゲゲの鬼太郎:専念呪の歌 「Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro: Sennen Noroi no Uta」/ KITARO AND THE MILLENNIUM CURSE (2008) – It was aired on network television and as I reviewed this in June, you can check there for a short summary.

TORNADO: DER ZORN DES HIMMELS 「トルネード」(2006) – Another movie aired on television. Not to be confused with Hollywood’s “Twister”. This was a German film. More like a German “Dante’s Inferno” but instead of nobody believing there is going to be in imminent explosion from a volcano, nobody believes the tornado expert who spent the last few years in the U.S. that a major twister is about to hit his home country.

3」(2008) – Okay, a kind soul on Facebook warned me not to watch this but as I had already rented the DVD and had watched Parts 1 and 2, I felt I had to watch this as well. The result – I should have listened to the kind-hearted soul. This is just rip-off of the Japanese anime Evangelion, where these military elites are trained to use the latest in military weaponry to fight the bugs (the enemy) using these body armors called “Marauders”.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 「ナイト・ミュジアム」(2006) – With “Night at the Musueum 2” playing in theaters around town, the first film was shown on television. It was such a cute movie that I watched it again.

CLIMBER’S HIGH (2008) – This is a Japanese movie based on a bestselling novel that uses the Japan Airlines accident in August 1985 as a backdrop to its story of how that incident affected a local newspaper. Over 500 people were lost in this accident making it one of Japan’s worst airline disasters. But the movie is more about how rival newspapers race to the accident site and try to be the first ones to report this big scoop.

THE TRANSPORTER 「トランスポーター」(2002) – Luc Besson movie which made Jason Statham an action star. I love this flick. Part 3 is now being shown in theaters so Parts 1 and 2 were being aired on television.

(2008) – An interesting concept. A Japanese, Brazilian, Canadian s-f movie where the entire population suddenly goes blind. Unfortunately, the movie gives you no answers to why everyone went blind, or why just one person, in this case Julian Moore, is the only left with her sight. I’ve read a book with a similar story that I found more entertaining. At least this sickness didn’t turn everybody into flesh-eating zombies, so I guess that was a change for the better.

[DEPARTURES] (2008) – Winner of this year’s Academy Awards for “Best Foreign Language Film”. This really is great movie that deals with a difficult subject – death. Our protagonist is a cello player who has just joined an orchestra. Unfortunately for him, with lack of funds, the orchestra disbanded, leaving our hero unemployed. With no new jobs in site, he suggests to his wife that the move back to his hometown in Yamagata Prefecture. As he searches the local paper for a job, he finds an ad about helping people with their travel plans. When he checks up on the job, it is not for a travel agency, it is to prepare the body of the deceased for their final journey.

[HANADA SHONEN SHI] (2006) – Part of television’s summer family movie fair. Previously reviewed

[THE GIRL WHO LEAPED THROUGH TIME] (2006) – Summer Family Movie Fair continues. Animated feature also previously reviewed.

TRANSPORTER 2 「トランスポーター2」(2005) – See above [The Transporter].

[20th CENTURY BOYS] (2008) – Previously reviewed

I hope you enjoy the films I watched from the month of August.

The Little Frypan /

This is where we had lunch in Musashi-koyama. We found a nice casual restaurant called [The Little Frypan]. One of their specialities was homemade grautin. I ordered their fettucine grautin while Mikako settle for her standard hamburger steak. My order includes bread and salad and a drink. Mikako's included a choice of rice or bread, salad, miso soup and a drink. The price lunch sets were less than a 1000yen.

A Walk around Musashi Koyama /

Now that we are back in Japan, we once again went in search of different neighborhoods to explore and walk around. Today, we hopped on a bus headed for Gotanda and got off at an area called Musashi-Koyama. What interesting things will we find?

We started our walk by checking out the busy shotengai (market street would be the closest translation I suppose). We love going to different shotengais. There is always some interesting store to be found, and of course, a lot of food as well.

We then came upon this little shrine in a residential area. It seems to have built for fire prevention.

We also found this nice looking Spanish restaurant that we may go to some day, if we can find it again.

Betty Boop was in the neighborhood as well.

We were also looking for a quiet little place to have lunch, but you know that I will write that up as a separate post.

But as we were having lunch on the second floor of this building. Our view was of a yakitori shop that seemed to be doing brisk business. We decided then and there that we would buy some for dinner this evening.

Don't you just love the store sign?

Doesn't that just look wonderful.

And off to home it was.

Sri Lanka Festival 2009 /

You would think that after a long flight back to Tokyo from the States, and then seeing my mother-in-law off to Tokyo station the following day, Mikako and I would just go home and relax. Of course not! I get a call from a friend of mine who says there's a Sri Lanka Festival happening at Yoyogi Park and how about joining us. So, do we like normal people refuse and say, "Nah, I'm gonna go home and get sleep." No, we say, "we'll see ya in a couple of hours!"

We didn't think it was going to be crowded as we went last year and there were only a few food booths. So imagine our surprise when there were as many food stalls as you would see at the popular Thai festival with a crowd to match. Sri Lanka being a close neighbor of India, we were not surprised to find curry on the menu. And the Namaste India Festival is only a couple of weeks away as well. We may be headed for curry overkill!

What's on the menu you ask? Just check out the pictures below.

Had to have a samosa as well.

We would need some kind of beverage to wash this all down. Our choice for today was Lion Beer with a choice of Lager or Stout.

But wait - there was dessert as well.
