Bhutan Cuisine [Gatemo Tabum] / ブータン料理 「ガテモタブン」

My wife and I had been addicted to a Japanese drama show called [The Solitary Gourmet] and on one of the episodes in Season 5, the main character finds himself in Yoyogi Uehara and comes upon a Bhutanese restaurant called [Gatemo Tabum]. As a fan of trying ethnic cuisines, this was one place I definitely wanted to check out before moving to Aomori. I'm sure this is the only Bhutanese restaurant in Tokyo or rather in Japan for that matter and my culinary curiosity got the best of me. So when my wife asked where we should go for a walk on a sunny day, I of course suggested Yoyogi Uehara. My wife knows me too well. She saw right through my plan. I said we haven't been to Yoyogi Hachiman Shrine, this would be a good opportunity to check it out (and an even better chance for me to talk her into going to the Bhutanese place). But being the understanding wife she is, we did go to Yoyogi Hachiman Shrine but we also did go to Gatemo Tabun for lunch.

僕と妻は結構ハマったドラマがありました。それは「孤独のグルメ」。ある話に主人公の五十嵐さんが代々木上原に行ってそこに出会ったのはブータンの料理店の「ガテモタブン」。ここはもうしかて東京で唯一のブータン料理の店、や、日本で唯一のブータン料理の店に違いない。青森に引っ越す前に絶対その店を食べに行きたいと思った。ある良い天気の日妻がどっか散歩に出かけようかと訪ねたので、僕の提案はもちろん代々木上原でした。代々木八幡もまだ行ってないし、今日なら良いじゃないとおもい。で本当はブータン料理店にランチを行こうとしてた。さすが僕の妻。僕の考えは全て読まれた。妻は優しいから代々木八幡に行きまたとランチはもちろんガテモタブンに決定。

ランチの営業時間に間に合いました。

Lunch set is less than 1,000yen and includes soup, salad and rice with free refills for the rice. You can choose from four different main dishes - Pagsha Pa (Pork and Chili with radish), Jasha Maru (Chicken & Chili with Tomato), Shamu Datshi (Chili & Cheese Stew with mushrooms) or Ema Omelette (with original ketchup sauce). My wife chose the Pagsha Pa while I ordered the Jasha Maru.

ランチセットは１０００円以下でスープ、サラダとライス付き。ライスはおかわり自由。ランチメニューは４種類あり。パクシャパランチ（豚ばら肉、大根、どうがらしの炒め煮）。ブータン料理の代表料理の一つと書かれた。ジャシャマルランチ（鷄もも肉、にんにく、トマト、ビーマン等で炒め、コリアンダーを加えた料理です）。シャモダツイランチ（きのこ、トウガラシ、チーズを煮込んだ料理で、辛さを抑えめに作ってあります）。最後にエマオムレツランチ（プレーンのオムレツにフレッシュの刻んだとうがらしが入ってます）。妻はパクシャパを選び僕はジャシャマルを注文。

Even the dressing for the salad seem to be seasoned with a bit of hot pepper. The soup had a bit of a curry flavor. The entire meal was delicious. By the way, my wife did not eat the large hot pepper placed across her bowl! I don't recall what my wife drank with dinner but I ordered a lassi. A good thing too. Everything was spicy but so delicious, I'm glad we made the effort to have lunch here. I was quite satisfied. Whenever we get a chance to go back to Tokyo, I hope to be able to eat here again.

サラダのドレッシングもとうがらし入りと感じました。スープもカレー風味。言っときますが、妻は上に乗ってる唐辛子は食べてませんよ。妻はランチでなにを飲んだか忘れましたが、僕はラッシーを頼みました。本当に全部の料理は辛く感じたが、とっても美味しかった。満腹になったし、行って良かった。自分は満足しました。いつか東京にもだったらまたここに食べに行ってみたいです。

Last Days in Tokyo / サラバ東京

As most of you know, last month I have moved from Tokyo to Aomori. It has taken a while to get the internet set up in my new home. And although this post is titled "Last Day in Tokyo", it will not be the last post on this blog. I still have many adventures in Tokyo that I want to share. So I will continue to update this blog but I plan on starting a new blog as I am no longer "Ern in Tokyo" but currently "Ern in Aomori". My apologies to any readers who have been wondering why there has been no updates in over a month.

ご存知の方は何人もいると思いますが、先月私は東京から青森に移住しました。義理の母と一緒生活することを決心しました。家のパソコンが約一ヶ月でやっと復活致しました。このネタのタイトルが「サラバ東京」になってますが、しばらくこのブログを更新します。まだ東京で体験したことが沢山ある。同時に青森のネタは新しブログを作成する予定なので、そちも楽しんで読んで下さい。今までは「Ern in Tokyo」でしたが、現在は「Ern in Aomori」だ。僕のブログの読者の皆様長い間を留守してすみません。

This is the view from my the front of my apartment. The thought of leaving this small abode fills me sadness and foreboding as I will venture north into new surroundings and an unknown future. However, it was a choice I made, so at the same time I am filled with a bit of excitement as well. But when I think I will no longer be able to see this view, it does fill me with a bit of melancholy.

これはアパートの前の眺め。この小さなアパートが最後になるのはちょっと切なくて不安がいっぱい。これから青森に移住することが決定して、この眺めは二度と見れなくなるのはとっても悲しいです。でも人生の新たな一歩も楽しみでたまみりません。

All packed up and ready to move. The movers have arrived and are removing our life in Tokyo - about 40 boxes, two large tables, a bookshelf, our large screen tv, and a few other odds and ends.

荷造りは結構前から完了して、本日引越し屋が来て次から次の箱を運ばれに来た。約４０箱。大きなテーブル、テレビ台、テレビ、大きな本棚などが段々消えて行く。

The movers will dispose of our washing machine, refrigerator and fortunately helped move our couch as well.

条件付きで洗濯機と冷蔵庫は引越し屋が処分してくれる。残った粗大ゴミのソファもうちの４階から１階まで運んでくれた。助かりました。

We really are going to move. So strange that this would be the last night we spend here after living here for eleven years. As we have no dishes or microwave to heat food, we went to dinner at our neighborhood family restaurant Gusto for our final supper in Tokyo.

本当に引っ越すんだ。十一年お世話になったアパートで今夜が最後の夜だ。まだ自覚してない。食器もレンジもないので、近くのファミリーレスで夕食することになった。近所のガスト。ここも結構お世話になったな。

So empty.

アパートが空っぽだ。

The last day is finally here. We are just waiting for our landlord to come by to inspect the apartment. Hopefully we will get the majority of our deposit back. It's 8am. Our landlord said she would come by at 11am. Three hours to wait with no television or radio. Only our cell phones and each other to entertain ourselves.

最後の日がやっと来た。大家は朝１１くる予定。今の時間は朝８時。まだ３時間もある。テレビもない、ラジオもない、携帯と二人だけしかいないこの空間はなんだろう。

Our landlord came. Inspected our place. We did manage to get back the majority of our deposit which was a blessing. This will help us for our first month in Aomori.

大家が来た。良かったことに保証金が結構戻ってきた。これで青森の最初の一ヶ月はなんとか安心出来る。

This really is my last beer in Tokyo. We had time for lunch at Tokyo station before hopping on the shinkansen with a one-way ticket to Aomori!

これが本当に東京最後のビール。出発時間まであとわずか。

Stew Restaurant Hippopotamus (new location) / シチューの店「ヒポポタマス」(移店先）

My wife and I had a favorite neighborhood restaurant called [Hippopotamus] where we went to eat weekly for a long time period. The specialty of the restaurant was its beef stew but we were hooked on their garlic-cream chicken. One day while we were walking, we noticed that the space where the restaurant was supposed to be was empty! It was a very sad day or so we thought until we continued walking and discovered that they didn't close, they only moved to a new location. By this time we had not been going every week, only on a few rare occasions. But being so happy to know that they didn't close, one Saturday afternoon, I decided to have lunch at the new location.

自分の近所に以前僕と妻の気に入りのビーフシチューの店「ヒポポタマス」がありました。 長い期間毎週行きましたね。シチューが店の自慢ですが、私たちがはまったのチキンのガーリッククリームソース。これは絶品。ある日散歩しながら、店がなくなってた。びっくりの上結構悲しい気持ちになった。でも散歩を続いたら、またびっくり、店は潰れたんじゃなくて、移転しました。良かった。まだあの大好きなガーリッククリームチキンが食べられる！ちょっと前だけど、昼食の時間でウロチョロしてる時、思い出した。ヒポはランチもやってる、そこに食べに行こうっと。

The restaurant moved from Wakabayashi to a busy shotengai (market street) near Shoin Jinja. The new location has a larger space but still retains its homey atmosphere.

店の移転先は世田谷線の若林駅近くから同じ世田谷線の松蔭神社の商店街へ。店内が前より広くなってますが、以前と同じ様な暖かい雰囲気です。

Oh no! I thought again as I noticed the garlic cream chicken was not listed on the lunch menu. Fortunately, since I have been a long time customer, the owner made my favorite dish for me! The lunch set includes salad with home-made dressing and you can choose if you would like rice or bread as well.

あっ！とまた思った。今度は僕が大好きなガーリッククリームチキンはランチメニューに載ってない！良かったことに、自分は元常連客だったので、オーナーが僕の好物のメニューを作ってくれました。ランチセットはサラダ（手作りドレッシング入り）とライス付き。ライスはパンに変わることも可能。

Their homemade dressing is to kill for. So delicious. I had asked for the recipe once and had given it to my sister but she told me she lost it.

I decided to have the bread with my lunch instead of rice as I like to dip the bread into the garlic sauce as well.

僕はライスよりパンを選びました。パンはガーリックソースを付けて食べるのも俺流。

2016 New Year Welcoming Party / ２０１６年 新年会

Japan has a tradition of having an end of the year party in December called the bonenkai and then a welcoming the new year party called the shinnenkai. My friends and I usually celebrate both the bonenkai and shinnenkai at our friend's restaurant [Kitamachi Utou] in Ushigome Kagurazaka. This year would be no different.

日本で年末に忘年会があって、新年には新年会があり。僕の回りの友達は毎年牛込神楽坂にある「北町 善知鳥」という店で忘年会と新年会を開催する。今年の新年会も友達とその店に集まってワイワイしました。
