A Walk around Kagurazaka / 神楽坂の散歩

After eating delicious burgers at Martini Burger, my friends and I decided to walk around Kagurazaka before finding a place to study.  The first place we stopped off at was Akagi Shrine.

美味しいバーガーを食べたあとと、英会話の勉強をする前に神楽坂周辺でお散歩しました。最初に探索したのは赤城神社。

And then we went to a different shrine.  This one amongst the shops and restaurants along the main road through Kagurazaka.  Zenkokuji, also known as Bishamonten-sama which is one of Seven Lucky Gods of Fortune.

 

次は神楽坂で有名なお寺、善国寺（通称神楽坂の毘沙門天様）に行っていきました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But what Kagurazaka is really known for is its maze of small alleyways.  The area is very beautiful, full of high end kaiseki restaurants and other more reasonably priced establishments as well.  It's like a little piece of Kyoto right in the middle of the big Metropolis with quaint names like Kakurenbo Yokocho and Hyogo Yokocho.

 

でも神楽坂と言えばやっぱり裏路地のほう。とっても素敵な場所。高級料亭などが並んでるところ。東京なのに京都にいる様な感じ。芸者が出る様な雰囲気。エリアの名前も可愛いーかくれんぼ横丁と兵庫横丁とか。

As we were walking, we were also looking for a nice cafe or coffee shop where we could relax and hold our English conservation class. 

 

散歩しながら、どっかの落ち着いたカフェや喫茶店も探しました。そろそろ英会話をやらないっと。

 

 



 

We discovered this little coffee shop.  However, it isn't your typical coffee shop or cafe.  It was called The Times Cafe.  Its like a little library without the books.  You don't pay for your meal.  You pay by the time you spent in the cafe.  Similar to the manga cafes.  Wifi available, drinks for free, computers you can borrow.  And so we had our little class for about an hour or two.  Until the next time!

 

途中でこういうカフェを発見。でも普通のカフェではなかった。私たちが初めて行った時間性のカフェです。学生たちに良いところと思うよ。Wifiあり、ジュースの飲み放題、心地良いソファとか。ここで一時間か二時間英会話をしました。結構楽しい時間を過ごしました。でわ、また次の英会話教室へ！

 

English Conversation and Burgers at Martini Burger / バーガー屋のマーティニバーガーで英会話

 

Another month and another burger shop.  This month (actually the end of February), it was time for some English conversation with my friends Ryoko and Yukie.  This month it was Yukie who chose the burger shop.  This place was listed on an article on Time Out Tokyo of the top burger shops.  It is located in the ritzy neighborhood of Kagurazaka and is run by a New Yorker who has been in Japan for four years now.

 

今月（本当は２月）で新たなバーガー屋で友達二人に軽い英会話教室。今回この店を選んだのは友達のゆきえ。TimeOut Tokyoの記事で発見したらし。店の名前は「マーティニバーガー」。場所もお洒落の町神楽坂。 オーナーはニューヨーク出身のアメリカ人。日本でまだ４年しか立てないのに、この店が話題になってます。

 

 

 

As you can see from the decor, this does not seem like a burger shop, but I assure you it is.

 

店内の雰囲気はバーガー屋ではないですが、ちゃんとしたバーガー屋です。

And this is the burger I chose - the Matenro!  The meat patty (which is buried under all those goodies) is topped with sauteed red onions, bacon, chili, mushroom, avocado, cheddar and Gouda cheese!  A little on the expensive side at ￥2,000 but oh, so good!

 

僕が選んだバーガーは摩天楼（まてんろう）というものでした。 パティが見えない位具が沢山。タマネギ、ベーコン、チリ、マッシュルーム、アボカド、チェダーチーズとゴーダチーズがトッピングさます。

 









 

 

 

My friend Ryoko chose the No.1 seller - the Mushroom Burger which is served with mushrooms, Gouda cheese and a butter herb sauce.

 

友達の涼子ちゃんが注文したのは店の人気No.1のマッシュルームバーガー。中身はマッシュルーム、ゴーダチーズ、バターとハーブソース。

 

 

 

 

Yukie ordered the No.2 selling - Little Italy.  This burger is topped with Mozzarella cheese and served with spicy ketchup and a basil sauce.  And by the way, that ketchup was really spicy!

 

ゆきえが注文したのは人気No.2のリトル・イタリー。このバーガーに入ってるのはモッツァレラチーズ、スパイシーケッチャプとバジルソース。

To be honest though, we did not hold our English conversation class here.  After eating lunch, we walked around Kagurazaka before finding a nice little cafe to study, but that will be for the next post.

 

正直に言いますが、英会話はこの店でやりませんでした。結構人気で混んでる店なので、勉強する落ち着きはありません。 ランチを食べた後は、神楽坂で散歩して、時間性のカフェを発見し、そこのカフェで勉強開始。神楽坂の散歩の話はまた今度。



 



 

Cherry Blossoms 2015 at Meguro River / 目黒川の花見２０１５年

Last Saturday as I met up with my wife after she got off work.  She suggested going to see the cherry blossoms along the Meguro River.  I was unprepared but it was still light out and the weather was fine so we walked from Sangenjaya to the Meguro River.  It's about a 20 minute walk or so.  And the cherry blossoms along the Meguro River are one of the most popular areas to check them out.  Not only that, they were in full bloom.  When we reached the Meguro River, we saw Yuya Uchida  (he is a Japanese rock star).

土曜日うちの妻が仕事終わったら、三軒茶屋で待ち合わせしました。妻が今から目黒川の桜を見に行こうと言いだして、散歩開始。三軒茶屋から目黒川は徒歩で２０分位かな。もう満開になってるのも知らなかったが、本当に行って良かった。 目黒川に着いたら内田祐也を発見。

Not only did we get to enjoy the cherry blossoms while it was light out, we will enjoying the blossoms as day turns into night.

As Mikako and I haven't had dinner yet, we of course had to check out the various food booths offering various victuals. 

まだ夕飯食べてないので、川沿いの店や屋台もいっぱいあったから、美味しいものも探してみた。

The first food booth we stopped at was a place featuring some Korean cuisine - toppogi and a meat skewer, along with a beer of course.  Mikako was also happy with the background music featuring Big Bang.

最初に止まった屋台は韓国料理のところ。トッポギと牛串焼き。もちろんビールと共に。ビッグバンの音楽も流れてた。

The toppogi was nice and spicy.  The meat skewer also came with some kimchi as well.

トッポギがスパイシーで美味しい。串焼きにキムチもあり。

でもまだ食べ終わってないよ。

Tandoori chicken or samosas?  We bought a couple of samosas.  This booth also sold some spicy yakisoba.  It had bits of tandoori chicken in it.  Very delicious.

タンドリチキンかサモサ？ サモサを購入。チキンも美味しそうだったけど、この屋台はなんとスパイシー焼きそばも販売してた。焼きそばにタンドリチキンも入ってた。とっても美味しかった。

We were getting a little full, so time to walk off our dinner while looking at more cherry blossoms.

お腹いっぱいになって、散歩しながら、夜桜を楽しめた。

 

 

We also treated ourselves to some Australian sparkling wine.  Uh, no, we did not drink all of those bottles!!

 

オストラリア産スパークリングワインも飲みました。 あの空瓶全部飲んだたわけがないですよ。

 

 



 

 

While wandering around, I ran into a former co-worker from my previous place of employment.

 

歩きながら偶然の元同僚と遭遇。

 

 



We decided to have one more drink before heading back home and came upon a small Okinawan restaurant.  We ordered ourselves another glass of wine and also received a sata andagi as service. I suppose the blossoms will be gone when I meet my friends for hanami in a couple of weeks.

帰る前にもう一本飲もうと小さな沖縄料理店を発見。そこでまたワインを飲んで、サービスで沖縄名物スイーツのサタアンダギを貰いました。 友達で花見するときは花見じゃなくて、もう葉見になってるじゃないかな。
