Ern's Monthly Page Turners (October 2010)

Greetings everybody. Yes, I am not making you wait four months before you get to read my book reviews for October. Isn't that great? Well, I thought so. I even managed to write two book reviews for the "Asia by the Book" blog as well and have started on another one as well, but I will save that for next time. This month I will subject you to a variety of genres - children's, food and travel, books and travel, a graphic novel, music, and some fiction as well. I hope you enjoy the ride.

IT’S A BOOK by Lane Smith – This may be a children’s picture book but it’s such a great one that I just had to share it with all my readers. In fact, the story might go over the head of little ones. But heck, if I had a kid, I would definitely by this for him/her, in fact I wouldn’t mind having this in my own library collection. Any story that promotes reading books can’t be a bad thing. And I love Lane Smith’s illustrations as he also did the art work for most of Jon Scieszka’s books as well which I thoroughly enjoy. Our story has only three main characters – a monkey, a jackass, and a mouse. The jackass is wondering what in the world monkey has in his hands. Monkey responds, “It’s a book”. Jackass then asks questions which reminds us how far technology has come and how it’s the simple things in life are soon forgotten. What am I talking about. A book of course. Jackass asks, “How do you scroll down?”, “Can you blog on it?”, “Tweet?”, “Text?”, “Wifi?” “Does it have a mouse” to which the monkey replies, “No, nope, no, no” and follows all of his replies with “It’s a book!”. Finally, the monkey just hands the book over to jackass who starts to read, and read, and read…and says he’ll charge it up when he’s done with it. The a little mouse pops out from under monkey’s hat and says, “You don’t have to” with the final, “It’s a book!”. Well, actually the last line is, “It’s a book, jackass!”

COMMUNION : A CULINARY JOURNEY THROUGH VIETNAM by Kim Fay – A week prior to reading this book, I spent a day at Yoyogi Park where the annual Vietnam Festival was being held. On this day I indulged in a variety of Vietnamese cuisines. Before that, the only Vietnamese dish I knew off the top of my head were spring rolls and pho “noodles”. I had no idea what bahn xeo , but it looked delicious so I had to try it. Of course I treated myself to a bowl of pho with clams and spring rolls as well. But Fay’s book not only features the most commonly known items, she fills us in on other dishes such as banana flower salad and clam rice. Fay had lived in Vietnam for four years in the '90s and wanted to be able to make the Vietnamese dishes she fell in love with for herself and friends in America and decided that she would have to go to Vietnam and learn how to do so properly. She also gives us a bit of history lesson of the region she visits along with origins of the items she eats. Full color pictures taken by Julie Fay Ashborn gives the impression of being in Vietnam in the now and will make you hungry to experience more Vietnamese cuisine. Fay’s culinary journey starts from Vietnam’s capital – Hanoi and then travels south to Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Dalat, Phan Thiet, and ending her odyssey in Saigon (currently Ho Chi Minh City). Her culinary trip wouldn’t be complete without mentioning nuoc mam (Vietnamese fish sauce) which is a main ingredient to Vietnam’s cuisine as much as ajinomoto (MSG) and soy sauce are to Chinese and Japanese dishes. Fay takes us to haute cuisine restaurants with celebrity chefs to street cafes and anything in between. Bon Appetit! Now, I think I will treat myself to some banh mi!

THE GREEN-EYED MOUSE AND THE BLUE-EYED MOUSE by Bob Gill – This is another cute little children’s book written and illustrated by Bob Gill who also happens to be a graphic designer. Noah is a mouse with green eyes who lives in a hole and thought he would go out until he saw a blue eye staring back at him. Rafaella is a mouse with blue eyes who thought she would go exploring and discovered a hole only to find a green eye staring back at her. Noah thought the blue eyes might belong to a dragon or snake or something just as dangerous. Rafaella thought the green eyes might belong to some scary creature as well. They start a dialogue with, “Who are you?” “Who are you?” “I’ll tell you if you tell me first”. Each page shows what the mice imagine who the blue eye and green eye might belong to. At the very end of the book, Noah and Rafaella will count to three and Noah will come out of hole.

SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH by Joel McIver – Having recently read Ozzy Osbourne’s autobiography “I am Ozzy” and seeing Ozzy in concert at Loud Park 2010, I had to read this biography on what some people would call the first heavy metal band – Black Sabbath. McIver mentions in the beginning that he did not interview Ozzy because most of the information he shares with us could be found in other books and interviews as well. After reading the Ozzy autobiography, the first half of this book was like a review as a lot of information was similar. But as this book is about Black Sabbath the band and not Ozzy, we get a glimpse of what the post-Ozzy years were like featuring new members such as former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio, Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan, and a host of others – Glenn Hughes, Tony Martin, and the list goes on. The story starts from their humble beginnings in the blue collar town of Birmingham to the band’s history up to 2007 when this book was published which includes the long-awaited reunion of the original members and how Ozzy and family became respected celebrities by being the stars of their own reality tv show on MTV, “The Osbournes” I was fortunate enough to see Sabbath when Ozzy was fronting the band for their “Never Say Die” tour in 1979 in which their opening act pretty much blew them off the stage – that band would have been the up and coming Van Halen. I also saw the original members again at the 1999 Ozzfest. A must for all Sabbath fans.

LEAVING MICROSOFT TO CHANGE THE WORLD : AN ENTREPRENEUR’S ODYSSEY TO EDUCATE THE WORLD’S CHILDREN by John Wood – My review was recently featured on the “Asia by the Book” blog that I also contribute to. What does a former executive of a multi-national corporation like Microsoft have to do with Asia? Everything! After spending nearly nine years in the fast lane and spending the last seven of those heading up the ladder to a senior level position at Microsoft by working long hours and foregoing extended holidays, John Wood thought it was about time to slow down just a little and take an extended break from the rat race. His vacation led him to the mountains of Nepal where there were no phones, no internet, no meetings, no commutes and absolutely no connection to the rest of the business world. On the first day of his three- week trek in the Himalayas, at a small lodge, an eight- year- old boy offers Wood a drink. Wood asks if they have beer. The boy replies yes, and rushes off to get him a bottle of Tuborg, as if he ran the lodge himself, then apologizes for the beer being warm— but he has an idea! He asks Wood to wait for ten minutes as he takes the bottle to the nearby river and submerges it into the cold water spawned from glaciers. Wood says to a local man who watched this exchange in amusement, “Who needs a refrigerator?” This quip begins a conversation that will change Wood’s life. Pasupathi, the man whom Wood meets at the lodge, is the “district resource person for Lamjung Province,” whose job is to find resources for seventeen isolated schools. The children are eager to learn but there is no money to invest in schools or school supplies. Some villages have a primary school which teaches only up to Grade 5; if students want to continue their education, they have to walk two hours to the nearest secondary school. However, families are so poor that children are needed to help with farm work which helps to account for Nepal’s nearly 70% illiteracy rate. Pasupathi says to Wood, “I am the education resource person, yet I have hardly any sources”. Wood asks to see the school that Pasupathi is on his way to visit and the next day the two men set off on a three-hour trek. At the school Wood is shown a first-grade class with nearly 70 students in a room that can hold barely half that number. He is taken to eight more classrooms all crowded with eager students who stand in greeting and yell “Good morning, sir” in unison, using perfect English. The final room Wood sees has a sign on the door that says SCHOOL LIBRARY. However, the room is empty except for an outdated world map on the wall that still shows countries like the Soviet Union, East Germany, and Yugoslavia. In his most polite manner, Wood says, “This is a beautiful library. Thank you for showing it to me. I have only one question. Where, exactly, are your books?”The few books the school has are locked in a cabinet so the students won’t damage them. The library features “The Lonely Planet Guide to Mongolia”, “Finnegan’s Wake”, an Umberto Eco novel in the original Italian, and other books forgotten or abandoned by backpackers. Wood asks the headmaster how many students are enrolled in the school and is informed there are 450! The headmaster notices Wood’s surprise and says, “Yes, I can see that you also realize this is a very big problem. We wish to inculcate in our students the habit of reading. But that is impossible when this is all we have. Perhaps, sir, you will one day come with books” And this is where the story begins.

CUTTING FOR STONE by Abraham Verghese – This book reads like a Korean drama except the characters are British and Indian, and the story is set in Ethiopia. First of all, our main story starts with the birth of twins – Shiva and Marion who joined together at the head, by an Indian nun and a British surgeon named Thomas Stone. However, the mother dies giving birth, while the father who couldn’t accept the death of his only true love abandons the kids leaving them as orphans. They are brought up by a woman doctor who worked with Stone in a small village hospital along with another one of Stone’s colleagues who is in love with the woman doctor. (Are you confused yet?). At the beginning we don’t know if Stone is the father or not as he can’t accept the fact that the nun, Sister Mary Joseph Praise could get pregnant. Shiva and Marion grew up with the illegitimate daughter of the maid who works at the hospital, Genet. Anyway, its mostly a coming of age story for the twins whose country is on the brink of war. It has all the makings of a mini-series, drama, romance, betrayal, love, and survival. And it’s about the identical twins who have two very different personalities.

THE NIGHT BOOKMOBILE by Audrey Niffeneggar – This is a graphic novel by Niffeneggar who is the author of the bestselling “The Time-Traveler’s Wife”. As I mentioned while writing about “It’s a Book”, I just cannot resist stories with books as their main theme. In this story which was first serialized in the U.K. paper the Guardian is about a woman named Alexandra who had just had a fight with her boyfriend. As she decides to take a walk to cool off, she happens upon a traveling bookmobile. As she enters, she gets a feeling of déjà-vu as she checks out all the books. The book mobile carried every book she has ever read from the chapter books from her childhood to her own diary. However, the bookmobile closes at dawn. She looks for the bookmobile the following night but it is nowhere to be found. Alexandra becomes obsessed with finding it but it would be years later when she stumbles upon it again. In the years between finding the bookmobile, Alexandra had become a librarian and was determined to work in the bookmobile itself, however it would be a very high price for her to pay to do so. This would be a nice book for your visual library.

Random Photos /

It's been a while since I did post with the random pictures I took so today seemed like a good time as any. After the Furusato Shibuya Festival, I walked around areas of Shibuya that I don't usually venture off to.

I had to do a little research on this to find out what exactly was the "February 24 Incident" which this cenotaph commemorates. It was an attempted coup d'etat in 1936 against the current goverment by a few young radical military men who wanted to restore the Emperor back to the throne and honors the 17 activist soldiers and citizens who were shot to death. Interesting what you find out when you walk around without any plans.

33rd Furusato Shibuya Festival /

This weekend the 33rd Shibuya Festival was held at Yoyogi Park. I decided to take a look see. Unlike the food festivals that I've seen here, this is a community festival sponsored by Shibuya Ward. The park was divided into different zones. The Attraction Zone which included booths by the Boy Scouts, the Red Cross and other community clubs. The Bazaar Zone which is like a huge flea market. The World Zone which features booths from the different embassies in Shibuya Ward - the embassy of Peru, Ireland, Bulgaria, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, and Finland where you could meet Santa as well. There were also the communication zone, the kid's sports zone, and more. It was like a small version of the Azabu Juban Noryo Festival.

Booths along the entrance /

I dropped in on a booth that featured various flower arrangements. They all looked very professional but these were made by elementary and junior high school students.

Of course, the main reason I love these festivals is to check out the food. I wandered around seeing if there was anything interesting that perhaps I haven't tried yet. The first item I came across was sold at the Bulgarian embassy booth - Rose Juice. It was fairly sweet and really does have the fragrance of rose!

As I wasn't that hungry, the next item I tried was also an unusual drink. This time from the Peruvian embassy booth. I tried something called chicha morada - which I learned is a non-alcoholic drink made from purple maize. Yep, a purple corn drink! But trust me, it tastes a lot better than it sounds. Which I then followed with a pisco sour (Pisco being a Peruvian spirit).

The Peruvian embassy booth was also selling Inca Kola as well, but I had featured that particular beverage quite a while ago.

The Irish embassy booth was next to the Peruvian embassy booth where I spotted this Leprechaun!

And you know I cannot resist craft beers, so I treated myself to Fujizakura Heights Rauch beer. I nice dark beer made with the waters from Mount Fuji.

I did go back to the Peruvian for a nice grilled sausage though because they were looking mighty delicious.

And so ended my little adventure at the Shibuya festival. However, it was still light out so I walked around some more finding other interesting things in the neighborhood, but I will save that for another post.

Uriah Heep 40th Annivesary Japan Tour 2010 /

I’ve been a fan of Uriah Heep since the 9th grade when a friend of mine introduced me to them with their album “The Magician’s Birthday”. I’m also a subscriber to the Uriah Heep newsletter as well. However, whenever I read the newsletter, it seems the band was always on tour in Europe or the Americas. I had given up on them coming to Tokyo. But last month, as Jon Bon Jovi was on the cover of “Burrn Magazine” (a magazine dedicated to the hard rock/heavy metal scene), I knew I had to buy the issue for my wife. At home as I was looking it through it, there is a page that features upcoming shows in Japan. And there I saw it! Uriah Heep, two days in Japan at Club Citta in Kawasaki on Saturday and Sunday (October 23 & 24)! “NO WAY!, I must go!!”. Mikako knows that they are my favorite band and that I was determined to go. At first I was going to go on my own on Saturday, but Mikako decided she wanted to see them as well so we went to Sunday’s show. The venue opens at 4:00pm and the show would start at 5:00pm.

It was a slightly rain day on Sunday as we headed out the door. I had been to Club Citta before seeing bands such as Paradise Lost and Rhapsody with Edguy, but I hadn’t been there since it had been renovated (some years ago). I imagined it was going to be a standing only show but to my surprise, it was an all reserved seating show. But as the venue isn’t that large, any seat would have been a good seat. I thought this tour was in promotion of their new “Best of” album but when we got to the venue, the posters showed that it was their “40th Anniversary Japan Tour 2010”. I also learned that the Heep hadn’t been to Japan in 19 years and this was only their third visit! The poster depicted Roger Dean’s artwork from Uriah Heep’s 4th album “Demons and Wizards”. Reading a line below the group’s name, in Japanese it said 『悪魔と魔法使い』完全再現!!([Akuma to Mahoutsukai (Japanese title for “Demons and Wizards”) Kanzen Saigen (which means they will be performing songs from that album in its entirety in the same order as on the album). I would have been happy with just that, but the poster said not only would they be playing the entire album but the set would also include some of their best known tunes as well and songs from their latest studio release “Wake the Sleeper” as well. With a 40 year history and a catalog of over 20 studio albums, there are quite a few songs to choose from. As the “Demons and Wizards” album was main focus of the concert, the set lists were not that much different between Saturday and Sundays show. An excellent set list if I do say so myself (check below).

I know what you're thinking. Uriah Heep? They're still around? Uriah who? Yes, Heep, that's who. As you can see from the title of this post, Uriah Heep has been going strong for 40 years now! There may have been quite a few line-up changes, but with the current members - Mick Box, Trevor Bolder, Bernie Shaw, and Phil Lanzon (long time drummer Lee Kerslake left the band in 2007 due to health problems), they have been together for over twenty years now making this one of the most stable line-ups since the days of Ken Kensley, David Byron, & Gary Thain! (which most hardcore fans, including me, will say was the best line-up ever. Anyway, sit back and let me tell you about the show as I saw it. As we took our seats, Mikako couldn't help but notice that it was an older crowd that came to the show. She said it seemed like we were at the horse betting racetracks. Well heck, even I'm near my 50s so that can't be helped.

As the lights went out they and the Heep went into their first song - the title track off their latest studio album, "Wake the Sleeper" which features that unique Box guitar sound with minimal lyrics. A very rocking number to get the fans on their feet. This was followed by another song of the new album, "Overload". A song which sounds similar to their stuff from the early '80s a la "Head First", "Raging Silence" era. Then they played one of my favorite tunes from their "Salisbury" album ("Uriah Heep" album in the States) called "Bird of Prey". However, Shaw eliminated the "ooh! ahs!" from the end of the song. Then the picked the song that was a hit single from the "Sweet Freedom" album - "Stealin'". Bernie got the crowd singing aloud to the chorus of "Stealin'!" as he sang the refrain of "When I should have been buyin'". This was followed by a tune off one of the their later albums, "Love in Silence" from the "Sea of Light" album. Those first five songs were a prelude to the main course of the evening - the "Demons and Wizards" album performed in its entirety! I couldn't help but sing to all the songs as well! You can check the set list below for the songs off that album. Just when you thought the show was winding down, the played the ballad "Rain" from "The Magician's Birthday" album. Perhaps this would be the last song before the encore. But no, they chose a song from the John Lawton era and performed "Free and Easy". But better yet, the next song was also from their debut album and one of their signature songs - "Gypsy"! Could this show get any better? Yes it can! Because after gypsy the played the title song of their third album, "Look at Yourself". The next tune was from their latest and was penned by the bass player Trevor Bolder called "Angels Walk with You". "Shadow" was once again off the new album as well. But then, that Hammond organ intro to the best song on their "Look at Yourself" album - "July Morning"! I didn't want the evening to end. Unfortunately, as the cliche states, "all good things must come to end". But it wouldn't be a Heep show without an encore, and the fans would never forgive the band if they didn't play another one of their most popular tunes - "Lady in Black"! Of course I would have loved to seen them perform "Return to Fantasy", "Free Me", and "Sunrise" as they did on Saturday's show, but I'm not one to complain!

客席がコーラスの“Stealin'”を歌いながら、ショウがそのつづきの“When I should have been buyin'"を歌う。

I can hear you already saying "What? Only two films this month?" And one of those being a music documentary that was probably aired on VH-1. Yes, it's true. I didn't watch a lot of movies this particular month. The simple reason being the fact that I was watching old Japanese super hero shows from the '70s which I decided to save for a separate post. In fact, I was debating about adding the Sabbath title here under the label of films or doing a post on its on and labeling it music. Well, since I only watched one full movie this month, and that being aired on network television, the Sabbath documentary ended up here. I'm still in the middle of watching another super hero from the '70s as well but have been taking an extended break from it. Anyway, here are the two films that I watched in the month of October.

BLACK SABBATH : PARANOID : CLASSIC ALBUMS (2010) – Before seeing Ozzy at this year’s Loud Park festival, I had bought his new album “Scream”. At around the same time, I discovered this DVD about the making of Black Sabbath’s second album, “Paranoid”. This album is special to me because it was the first record I ever bought (with my own money). As I was still in the 5th grade, I used my monthly allowance (which at the time was about $10.00 a month) to buy it from Track Records in the Villa Plaza (longtime Lakewood residents will know what store I’m talking about). There is no doubt that this album is a classic! It sounded great when it first came out back in 1970 and it still sounds great today! It’s a program that tells that story behind the songs – the writing, the recording sessions, etc based on interviews, old film footage, and the original multi-tracks twith the band’s engineer Tom Allom. There is nothing greater than the original members of Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. And you mustn’t forget those classic tunes – “War Pigs”, “Iron Man”, “Faeries Wear Boots”, “Hand of Doom” and of course the title track “Paranoid”! Apparently, this DVD is part of series made by Isis Productions and distributed by Eagle Rock Entertainment. I imagine it was shown on VH-1 in the States. I’m looking forward on purchasing a few other titles in this series. I will never grow out of listening to hard rock and heavy metal. Can’t wait for next year’s “Loud Park”!

THE ISLAND (2005) – It was broadcast on network television so I decided to watch it again. This stars Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. To put it simply, this is a blend of “Coma” x “Logan’s Run”. Sometime in the future, a group of people work in an isolated environment, a type of Utopia. The one thing they all look forward to is winning the lottery to go to “The Island” (That would be Carousel in “Logan’s Run). However, one of the residents, Lincoln 6 Echo discovers the truth about the facility. That they were “harvested beings”, that there is no “Island”. They were clones made to provide organs and such to their sponsors (a la “Coma”, even though the coma patients did not realize their organs were being harvested). He saves his friend Jordan 2 Delta and together they seek out their sponsors to get help in showing the world what this facility is really doing. Of course the creator of the facility cannot let that happen and hires a mercenary to hunt and kill Lincoln 6 Echo and Jordan 2 Delta. Still, a decent science-fiction film that will keep you entertained.

I thought I would give you all a break from posts about music, books, or movies for a change and fill you in on a new kind of fast food that's rapidly becoming popular in Tokyo. On a cloudy Sunday without any specific plans, the wife and I decided to take a stroll around Shimokitazawa. It was Halloween and there were a number of kids dressed in costumes trick-or-treating at a bunch of different stores located in the market area that were participating in the event. After a little walking and a little shopping, and then it was time for a little snack. The fast food I mentioned earlier is a riceball wrapped with meat and originated in Kyushu. You also have a choice of toppings to choose from such as kimchee or cheese or tomato cheese or for a limited time you could choose gobo (burdock root) or takana (leaf mustard). I chose the tomato cheese while Mikako chose the kimchee. However, we ordered our nikkun-rolls to go and enjoyed them at home.

Ern's Monthly Page Turners (September 2010)

Well, okay. Just when I thought I got caught up on my book reviews, another month has ended and its now the beginning of November. Which means I need to write my book reviews for the month of October as well. Only three titles this month, and since two of them are in Japanese, I provided a review in Japanese as well. The first book may seem like a simple guide book but it is so jam packed with information it took a while to get through. As for the other Japanese title, reading it only proved that my Japanese kanji reading ability still has much room for improvement. I'm sure a native Japanese could probably finish the book in less than a day or at least within a week. Although it was most entertaining, it did take me nearly a month to read. The only English book featured this month was one that was spawned from a website of the same name. If you're a movie lover than you will be sure to enjoy that as well.

DREAM TRIP GUIDE edited by A-Works – The subtitle is pretty self-explanatory. This book is filled with 29 different dream trips and adventures. Information is provided on all trips including budget, best season to go, how to get there, arranging the trip, accommodations, and hints for the trip. Also included is information on nearby attractions. The book covers the entire world starting with the Americas and the Caribbean followed by Asia, Oceania, Europe and Africa. The final chapter give you information on taking an around the world tour. These trips can range in price from just under a $1000 to a little over $3000. As this is a Japanese publication, all trips are based out of Tokyo. The trips feature a wide range of activities as well. From driving across the U.S. in a recreational vehicle or river rafting down the Colorado River, to swimming with dolphins in the Bahamas or going on an eco-tour in Costa Rica. Two of my all time dream trips is featured as well. Seeing the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and Victoria Falls on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia.

FOUR WORD FILM REVIEWS by Benj Clews and Michael Onesi – When I fell behind writing my monthly book reviews, this was the book that inspired me to write my “Four Word Book Reviews” on Facebook. As I was four months behind (on my own schedule), I decided to give my Facebook friends the short and simple reviews so they would know that I haven’t stopped reading. Anyway, I was unaware of the website that spawned this book. Yep, thousands of people submit their “four word film reviews” on anything from Academy Award winning classics to the latest Hollywood releases. This book collects over 400 of them and I guarantee that some of them will make you laugh. Some of my favorites were written on the cover of the book itself such as “The Bourne Identity” (2002) - “One Bourne, many die”. Or “Jaws” (1975) - “Eat ship and die”. “The Hangover” (2009) – “What happened in Vegas”. Or how about the one for “Crash” (2004) – “Sandra not racist? Bullocks!”. Although my Facebook friends enjoyed my “Four Word Book Reviews”, I had one friend who said, “Don’t make it a habit”. It’s nice to know there are some people who actually read and enjoy my book reviews which keeps me reading and writing them!

[Kodoku no Chuka Soba “Eguchi”] by Masayuki Kusumi ‐ If I were to translate the title of this book into English, it would be “The Lonely Noodle Shop [Eguchi]”. If I were to directly translate the title into English, it would be “The Lonely Chinese Noodle Shop [Eguchi]”. However, the shop is neither lonely, nor does it feature Chinese noodles. It’s a small neighborhood ramen shop. Of course there will be those who would argue that ramen is Chinese noodles but we will leave that debate for another time. This book is the culmination of a previously out of print book that featured the ramen shop [Eguchi] which was originally published in 1984. The book had the extremely long title of 「近くへ行きたい。秘境としての近所―舞台は“江ぐち”とゆうラーメン屋」which translates to something like [I want to go near (or “I don’t want to go far”). An unexplored region of my neighborhood. The stage is a ramen shop called “Eguchi”]. With a title as long as that, it’s no wonder it went out of print. This is such a fun story that reads like fiction, (well the stories in the beginning of the book behind the main characters who ran the ramen shop were a product of Kusumi’s imagination), but you could not deny the love Kusumi had for this shop and its ramen, or the people who made it. After moving to Tokyo, even I had my favorite haunts where I was also welcomed as a regular customer. Even if I ventured out on my own, I would always find a friend or acquaintance either eating or drinking at one of the places I frequented. However, unlike Kusumi, I usually became friends with the manager or owner of the establishments I went to. Americans might have a hard time understanding the intricacies of becoming a regular at a small joint but it does give you peak into a lesser known part of the Japanese culture. A more detailed review will be forthcoming on the “Asia by the Book” blog.
