Tokyo Flashback : A Walk around Zoshigaya / 東京フラッシュバック：雑司ヶ谷の散歩

As we were leaving Ikebukuro and the Vietnamese restaurant [Pho Viet], we decided to head towards Zoshigaya. We decided to walk there. It should only take about ten minutes. 

ベトナム料理店「フォーベット」でランチを食べ終わったら、雑司ヶ谷を目指した。歩いて行きました。徒歩で約１０分しかかからないはず。

We walked past the United Church of Christ in Japan (UCCJ) Tokyo Ikebukuro Church.

歩きながら、日本基督教団（UCCJ）東京池袋教会を通った。

We were headed to Kishibojin Temple.

目指してたのは鬼子母神。

Age: Over 600 years old

Circumference : 8 meters (about 26 feet)

Height: 32.5 meters (106.6 feet)

But the coolest thing about Zoshigaya Kishibojin Temple is that it houses Japan's oldest dagashiya, the Japanese term for a Mom and Pop candy store. 

でも雑司ヶ谷鬼子母神で一番面白い見所は境内に日本一最古の駄菓子屋がある。

This name of this shop is [Kamikawaguchiya]. It was established in the first year of the Tenmei Era (1781) which means it's been in business for over 240 years. The Tenmei Era means this shop was doing business during the Edo era. 

駄菓子屋の名前は「上川口屋」。創業天明元年（１７８１年）。ということで２４０年以上営業してます。

Continuing our walk, we stopped at the Zoshigaya Otori Shrine. 

歩きながら、雑司ヶ谷大鳥神社にもお参りした。

Ebisu, one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. He is the God of Fisherman and Luck. 

七福神の恵比寿様。商売繁盛や豊作の神様と言われてます。

It seems Zoshigaya was known for its eggplants.

The Toden-Arakawa Line which is also known as the Tokyo Sakura Tram is the sole-survivor of Tokyo's Toden streetcars. However, it is not the only one left as the privately owned Setagaya Line is still in service as well. 

都電荒川線、通称東京さくらトラムは東京に残る唯一の都電。でも最後の都電ではありません。私有の都電、世田谷線はいまでも運行中。

What's this? A Christian cemetery at a Buddhist temple?

うん、これは何だ？ キリスト教の墓地がお寺の境内にあるの？

Well, this sign explains the mystery. 

このサインを読んで、謎が解けた。

The grave of Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki. It is located at the Zoshigaya Cemetery. 

日本を代表する作家、夏目漱石の墓。雑司ヶ谷霊園にあります。

This sign says that this area was used by falconers in the middle of the Edo era. The noble class hunted wild animals with falcons. 

へ～、江戸時代中期にこの辺に鷹匠が存在してました。鷹狩りも行ってたらしい。
