Tokyo Flashback : A Walk around Nishi Azabu and Toranomon Hills / 東京フラッシュバック：麻布十番と虎ノ門ヒルズの散歩

It was a Sunday, February 15. My wife and I were meeting our friend Tetsu and we were going to check out the new area of Toranomon Hills. We were meeting him at Azabu Juban and would walk around the neighborhood. But first we were planning on eating lunch. 

２０１５年、２月１５日。日曜日でした。僕と妻は友達のてっちゃんと会う約束してた。今日は新しく出来た虎ノ門ヒルズを探索する予定。待ち合わせ場所は麻布十番。そこから虎ノ門ヒルズまで歩く。でも最初はやっぱりどっかでランチを食べる。

We came across the building which looked like a restaurant. We decided to go check it out. It turned out to be a restaurant used in a major Hollywood feature. The restaurant was open and the price was reasonable so this is where we had lunch. 

この建物が気になって調べてみたら、普通のレストランでした。ま、普通というか、このレストランはハリウッド映画にも使われたところです。

It was the restaurant which features prominently in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill". 

このレストランはタランティーノ監督の”キル・ビル”の映画で登場するシーンがあります。

Dessert was ice cream with agar, 

デザートはアイスと寒天。

If you've seen "Kill Bill" perhaps you remember this scene. 

”キル・ビル”を見た方ならこのシーン覚えてるかも知りません。

Steve Tyler of Aerosmith dined here as well. 

エアロスミスのスティーヴ・タイラーもここで食事した。

After lunch, we decided to walk from Azabu Juban to Toranomon Hills. 

ランチと食べ終わっら麻布十番から虎ノ門ヒルズを目指した。

We spotted a lot of public art. This piece is called [Smile on the Foot of the Ladder] bt Mark Brusse of the Netherlands. 

あちこちにいろんな彫刻を見つけました。この彫刻のタイトルは「はしごの上で微笑んで」。作者はオランダ出身のマーク・ブルース。

I guess it's the frog that's smiling at the top of the ladder. 

微笑んでるのはやっぱり一番上に居るカエルさんかな。

I don't think this was an actual art piece but it looked interesting enough. 

これは正式な彫刻ではないんですが、結構面白いと思った。

This is Luck Dong's [Koun no Tane] which would translate to "Seed of Good Fortune".

This piece didn't have a title. 

この彫刻はタイトルはありませんでした。

I forgot the name of this character. 

このキャラの名前忘れた。

Tokyo Tower / 東京タワー

One of the most iconic symbols of Tokyo. 

東京のシンボルでも言える建物、東京タワー。

As we were continuing our walk to Toranomon Hills, we stopped by the Sawai Inari Shrine. 

散歩の途中に幸稲荷神社に寄りました。

This is the gate to a Buddhist temple called Seishoji.

Today, we walked pass the "Stairs of Success" at the Atago Shrine. 

今日愛宕神社にある出世の石段をスルーしました。

Here we are meeting the Toranomon Hills mascot - Toranomon.

As long as we're exploring Toranomon Hills, it only seemed appropriate that we should have a drink or two as well. 

せっかく虎ノ門ヒルズに来てるので、やっぱり軽く飲まないとね。

Enjoying ourselves with some Hoegaarden and Erdinger beers.

Tetsu and I had one more beer.

And so ended our adventure around Toranomon Hills.

そして虎ノ門ヒルズの探索が終了しました。

Tokyo Flashback : Shibuya Konno Hachimangu / 東京フラッシュバック：渋谷金王八幡宮（こんおうはちまんぐう）

After finishing lunch at the ramen shop, Kinden Maru, I decided　to　explore　an　area　of　Shibuya　that's　usually　neglected　in　most　English　guidebooks.　The guides all focus on the area around the Hachiko Statue. The fashion paradise for teens at １０９ or the Mandarake for the anime otaku. Of course, there is the 8-story Tower Records building where I used to work. But no, I know that area like the back of my hand so I was going to check out a shrine I read or heard about called the Konno Hachimangu. 

金伝丸のラーメンを食べ終わったら、渋谷であんまり知られてないところを探索しようと思った。英語のガイドブックもほとんど載ってないので、面白いかも。英語のガイドブックならファッションの聖地マル９やアニメオタクが好きなまんだらけはよく紹介されてる。あと渋谷と言えば世界一大かいなCDショップタワーレコードがある。8階建てのビルは全てタワーです。自分の元職場でもある。その辺は自分の庭みたいな感じだから、ちょっと別の場所を散歩する。自分の目的は渋谷金王八幡宮。

It wasn't the season to see the Konno cherry blossoms but I could check out the tree.

There was a little museum at the shrine so I decided to check that out as well.

Also located on the grounds of the shrine is the Tamazukuri Inari Shrine.

Across from the Konno Hachimangu was another shrine - the Toyosaka Inari Shrine.

It was rather quiet and I didn't know where to go to get my shrine seal from this place but I heard a lot of noices and found that kendo practice was being held in the shrine. 

こっちの神社が静かでとこにいけば御朱印を貰うか分からなかった。結構叫び声を聞こえたので覗いてみたら剣道の練習中だった。

There may not be a thousand red gates like the Fushimi Shrine in Kyoto but it still looks cool for such a small shrine. 

京都にある伏見稲荷神社より鳥居が多くないが、この東京都内の稲荷神社で十分と思う。

It was nearing the time when my wife would be getting home from work, so this was the end of my solo adventure for today. 

そろそろ妻がバイトから家に戻る時間だったので、今日の冒険はここで終了。
