Tokyo Flashback : A Walk around Togoshi Ginza / 東京フラッシュバック：戸越銀座商店街の散歩

My wife and I love exploring and walking along any shotengai which is the common name for a market street full of different kinds of shops, or simply put, a shopping street, including small restaurants and cafes. We read or saw something on television about the longest shotengai in Tokyo with a length of 1.3 kilometers (almost a mile long). It is a place called Togoshi Ginza, not too far from Gotanda station on the Yamanote Line. Of course, we had to check it out.

僕と妻がよく商店街を探索するのが好き。テレビか雑誌か面白い情報を得た。なんかの商店街の特集をやって、東京に一番長い商店街を紹介された。それが品川区にある戸越銀座。長さがなんと１．３キロ！もちろんそこに行くしかない。

First, we took a train from Gotanda station to Togoshi Ginza.

最初は五反田から電車に乗って、戸越銀座に行く。

And here we are at the Togoshi Ginza Shopping Street.

戸越銀座商店街に到着。

The sign on the front says "Receipt Campaign" but I have no idea what for.

レシートキャンペーンと書いてありますが、なんのレシートだろ？

Chef enticing us to come have lunch at his Italian restaurant.

シェフが私たちを自分のイタリアン料理を食べて欲しいと言ってそう。

You can get "Face Bread" here. They're accepting reservations. This would make for a fun gift.

このパン屋さんで「顔ぱん」を売ってる。お土産としては面白いかも。

Togoshi Ginza Shopping Street's mascot Togoshi Ginjiro. Often called Gin-chan.

戸越銀座商店街のマスコット戸越銀次郎。通称銀ちゃん。

Here's something you don't see nowadays - a milk shop.

こういう店中々目に入りませんよね。戸越銀座の牛乳屋。

Ginjiro can be in more places at one time.

銀次郎は同時にいろんなところに居るね。

But do you know what's the best thing about walking Shopping Streets? The food of course. I love checking out and trying the various items you can find at a market street. Like these curry buns and piroshkis.

商店街の一番の魅了でわかりますか？それはやっぱり食べ物でしょう。特に食べ歩き。例えばこの店がカレーパンとピロシキを売ってます。

Yes, I bought a piroshki.

はい、ピロシキを買いました。

I just can't resist them.

やっぱりピロシキに弱いです。

I spotted some Gin-chan muffins.

銀ちゃんマフィンがありました。

Yes, I bought and ate one of those too.

はい、銀ちゃんマフィンを買って食べた。

However, this is the shop I was really looking forward to going to. Their main food item is xiao long bao or soup dumplings. 

僕が一番行きたかった店はここ。この店の小龍包が食べたくて。

I spotted the Togoshi Ginza Hot Spring. We didn't go in though.

戸越銀座温泉発見。でも今日は温泉に入りませんでした。

Ooh, here's a shop my brother would love. A plastic model specialty shop. I'm terrible at making models. I only attempted it one time and did such a terrible job that I never bought another plastic model again for myself. My brother is great at making things. He used to make plastic models all the time when we were kids.

おう、うちの兄がこの店が好きかも。プラモデルの店だ。俺は人生で一回だけプラモデル作りに挑戦した。下手過ぎて、二度とプラモデル作りに挑戦することを誓った。逆にうちの兄はプラモデル作るの大好きで、子供の頃は良く集中していろんなモデル作った覚えがある。そして兄貴が使ったモデルはプロ並みだった。

We decided to eat lunch at this Chinese restaurant called [Hyakuban].

ランチも戸越銀座にある中華料理店の「百番」に行きました。

One of my favorite Chinese dishes is mabodofu. I love the spiciness and would top my rice with it and have mabodon.

僕が一番好きな中華料理と言えばやっぱり麻婆豆腐かな。白飯に乗せて、麻婆丼も好き。

And that concluded our adventure for the day.

ランチを食べて、戸越銀座の探索が終了しました。
