A Walk around Gotokuji / 豪徳寺の散歩

As we did not want to use the subway or trains to go to Gotokuji, we decided to walk.  We knew it would take us about 30 to 40 minutes but thanks to cell phone navigator, we would not aimlessly wander around

桜新町から豪徳寺で歩いて行くことに決めた私たちは、実香子の携帯のナビのおかげで迷わず目的地に辿り着きました。３０分位の散歩でした。

Gotokuji was chosen as one of Setagaya Wards 100 Scenic Spots.

 

招き猫の豪徳寺は世田谷百景の一つでもある。

In case you are not familiar with the story of the maneki neko (fortune cat), I borrowed this piece from Wikipedia.

 

[The maneki-neko (Japanese: 招き猫^?, literally "beckoning cat") is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman), usually made of ceramic in modern times, which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. The figurine depicts a cat (traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—often at the entrance—in shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. Some of the sculptures are electric or battery-powered and have a slow-moving paw beckoning. The maneki-neko is sometimes also called the welcoming cat, lucky cat, money cat, happy cat, or fortune cat in English].

 

 

このお寺が招き猫の伝説を生み出したお寺で有名。日本人なら誰でも知ってると思いますが、念のため、ウィキペディアからその伝説の話も借ります。

 

東京都世田谷区の豪徳寺が発祥の地とする説がある。

江戸時代に彦根藩第二代藩主・井伊直孝が鷹狩りの帰りに豪徳寺の前を通りかかった。そのときこの寺の和尚の飼い猫が門前で手招きするような仕草をしていたため寺に立ち寄り休憩した。すると雷雨が降りはじめた。雨に降られずにすんだことを喜んだ直孝は、後日荒れていた豪徳寺を建て直すために多額の寄進をし、豪徳寺は盛り返したという。

和尚はこの猫が死ぬと墓を建てて弔った。後世に境内に招猫堂が建てられ、猫が片手を挙げている姿をかたどった招福猫児（まねぎねこ）が作られるようになった。ちなみに、この縁で豪徳寺は井伊家の菩提寺となったといわれる。幕末に桜田門外の変で暗殺された井伊直弼の墓も豪徳寺にある。

また、同じ豪徳寺説でも別の話も有る。直孝が豪徳寺の一本の木の下で雨宿りをしていたところ、一匹の三毛猫が手招きをしていた。直孝がその猫に近づいたところ、先ほど雨宿りをしていた木に雷が落ちた。それを避けられたことを感謝し、直孝は豪徳寺に多くの寄進をした…というものである。

これらの猫をモデルとしたもうひとつのキャラクターが、井伊家と縁の深い彦根城の築城400年祭マスコット「ひこにゃん」である。

前述のように、招き猫は一般に右手若しくは左手を掲げているが、豪徳寺の境内で販売されている招き猫は全部右手（右前足）を掲げ、小判を持っていない。これは井伊家の菩提寺であることと関わりがあり、武士にとって左手は不浄の手のためである。そして小判をもっていない理由は「招き猫は機会を与えてくれるが、結果（＝この場合小判）までついてくるわけではなく、機会を生かせるかは本人次第」という考え方から
