Once again I was on my own, so I decided to go on my own walking tour of some random neighborhood. Okay, Kita Senju was not a random choice. A couple of nights ago while watching a show called "Onegai Ranking", there was a small corner on what to do for free on the weekend. One of the events was to check out the red Enma-sama at Shosenji Temple in Kita Senju (Enma Daiou being the ruler of the underworld in Buddhist mythology). What makes this red enma-sama special? It is only open to the public two times a year - January 15 & 16 and July 15 & 16. A former co-worker of mine also lives in this neighborhood and is also the location for a gourmet burger shop that I had been wanting to check out. I would be meeting my former co-worker around 3pm but was in Kita Senju around 1:30pm. I decided to do a little exploring on my own.
I started my walk by heading out the east entrance head explored the Gakuen Dori Market Street.
Where does it lead?

After checking out Shosenji Temple, it was off to eat at the Sunny Diner. But before that, we stopped off at another temple - Senju Moto Hikawa Jinja, a shrine that features one of the seven lucky gods of fortune. This one features Daikokuten, the Japanese God of Wealth and Farmers.

We thought this was the main temple, until we looked around the corner.

There really wasn't anything of interest down this market street. However, I came across a sign pointing to the Yanagihara Chigusa Botanical Gardens and decided to check it out. Before I found the garden, I came across a stairway in what seemed like the middle of nowhere so of course I had to climb it.
Once you reach the top, you can see the Arakawa River (the Yanagihara Chigusa Botanical Gardens was a little further away so I skipped it). Looking around this area, I realized that this was used for the opening scene in a popular Japanese television drama called "San Nen B Gumi : Kinpachi Sensei".

Time to head back to the station to hook up with my former co-worker to check out the Red Enma-sama at Shosenji Temple.
With the public viewing of the Red Enma-sama, the area had the atmosphere of a large festival. There were quite a few food booths to pass through before reaching the gate of the temple
