A Walk around Chofu and Jindaiji Temple (Part 1) /

On our day off, we decided to head out to Chofu and Jindaiji Temple. It's an hour long bus ride from our neighborhood to Chofu and another ten minute bus ride from Chofu station to Jindaiji Temple. But our first goal was to find Tenjin Street where you will find characters from Shigeru Mizuki's popular comic and anime "Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro". Unfortunately it took us nearly an hour to find the place because we discovered we were walking around in the wrong area - that's us, no sense of direction.

Tenjin Street /

Kitaro and Medama Oyagi /

Nezumi Otoko /

Neko Musume and Ittanmomen /

Yes, we only went to Tenjin Street so I could take these pictures.

I thought this was our bus as it's covered with characters from "Kitaro" but alas, our bus was to be a regular run of the mill one.

It was just around lunch time as we reached Jindaiji Temple. A friend of ours recommended a nearby soba shop called "Tamon". We decided to eat there before heading to the temple (but the soba shop will be featured in a separate post).

Jindaji Temple is also home to Shigeru Mizuki's Kitaro Chaya along with a Yokai Gallery (yokai loosely translated as spirits or demons). In Muzuki's comic, a lot of the scenery was modeled on areas around Chofu. Although we checked out the yokai gallery first, I thought I would share with you all pictures of Jindaiji Temple first.

Hi Ern,
I stumbled upon your blog. I am curious to know how far is Tenjin Street from Kitaro Chaya (say if I take a bus)? What is the decorated bus for , if you can't ride in it? I have visited Jindai Botanical Garden and Temple twice on Greenery Day. However, I never managed to go inside as it was so crowded. Is the gallery next to Kitaro Chaya or inside it? Hope to hear from you soon.
