Golden Week Adventures 2015 Day 5 (Part 2) Apple orchards, Iwakisan, Iwatesan, and a Iwate Prefecture Service Area /

And now our real road trip begins.

One of the many apple orchards you will see when you drive through Aomori Prefecture.

Mount Iwaki in the distance.

Seeing mountains like this makes me miss Mount Rainier back home in the States.

The first service area we stopped at was not much to write about but it is where we had brunch.

My wife and I ordered soba.  A good healthy choice for brunch.

Our friend Reiko's brunch was the jajamen.  We had a bite.  I don't know, it seemed to have a distinct taste.  It wasn't bad but it was kind of strange.

Our friend Yukio has a large appetite at any time of the day.  Just like me in my younger days (which I mean to be about a few years ago).  I just can't eat as much as I used to.

But I do enjoy a morning curry every now and then.

While in Aomori, must drink the Nebuta apple juice.

Sitting in the front passenger seat as it's my wife's turn to drive.  And this was one really long tunnel!

The next large mountain we came across was Mount Iwate.

Whoa, that's one large watermelon!  Interesting what you will discover on road trips.

Service area stop somewhere in Iwate Prefecture.

Watch out for snakes!

As we're nearing Fukushima Prefecture and the Fukushima Nuclear Power Planet (you know, that one that exploded and is giving off radiation), this service area features a radiation level monitor.

This area was also affected by the 3/11 earthquake and tsunami.

Damaged sign from one of the local schools.

I remember exactly where I was at this time on 3/11/2011.  It was a Friday afternoon.  It was only by coincidence that I had taken the day off from work that day.  I was sitting on the couch watching tv while talking to my mother on the phone when that large quake hit.  Its something I won't soon forget.

Before and after picture of the tsunami.  The above is before the tsunami hit.  Below, that whole area near the water was totally wiped out!

Our next little spontaneous traveling took us to see the Miracle Tree.

Golden Week Adventures 2015 Day 5 (Part 1) Kendo-ji /

It is our final day in Aomori.  Our friends will be coming to pick us up around 8:00am.  I think it was actually closer to 9:00am though.  But we weren't going to drive straight back to Tokyo.  No, our first destination was only a 5 minute drive by car.  I've been going to Aomori off and on for the past ten years but not once did my wife and I go to the temple that is located closest to her mother's house.  This would be my first visit to Kendo-ji.  My friend Yukio said this temple is home to 500 rakans.  Of course I want to check those out.

But first, I must say good-bye to my father-in-law.

This is Kendo-ji.  It doesn't look like much from the outside.  In fact, it looks like a small office building.  But there is a lot to see around the temple grounds.

I'm fairly certain that these are the six jizos representing the six realms of desire and karmic rebirth.

Hey, did you notice the tiny head without a body?  Look at the middle Jizo, then go down to the bottom and a bit to the right.  Did you also notice the small Jizo on the bottom left of the middle Jizo?

We are walking up the steps of Kannon-yama.

Jibo Kannon /

Statues of the Chinese zodiac line the path.

Panel detail.  These are awesome.

Here is my sign - the Rabbit.

My wife and brother - Year of the Rat.

My father - Year of the Horse.

My mother - Year of the Cow.

My sister - Year of the Tiger.

Home to 500 Rakans.

"Greetings travelers!"

"Now listen here!"

"Beer please!"

"Metal Rules!"

"Kids these days!"

"What do you mean there's a bird on my head?"

"We're just meditating"

The White Robed Kannon /

My mother-in-law's house is located across the way.

Aomori Prefecture - Land of Apples.

Okay, the building does look a lot more temple like when you view it from above.

These guys are just too darn cute.

And that dragon has a long neck!

At first there didn't appear to be anyone present.  But fortunately we waited long enough to talk to the Buddhist monk and received our temple seal.

We still have a 9 hour drive ahead of us but the next order of business was to get something to eat.  And our long drive home will continue...
