Japanese Microbrew Tour - Niigata Prefecture /

Made with Koshihikari (Brand name rice) - very Niigata isn't it? Tastes great too. This is Koshihikari Echigo Beer.

Just take it from me that it tastes great and I won't have to go to the trouble of translating the above.

Yoshoku-ya [Kuni Tei] /

A few weeks ago, we had to go to our Ward Office so I could update my Alien Registration Card (a required card for all foreigners living in Japan). I had recently become a permanent resident of Japan, and now I needed to update my ARC as well. We decided to have lunch nearby and we just happened to stumble upon this little place called Kuni-Tei that seemed to be a family-runned business. We were there just when they opened. Mikako ordered her standard when going to family restaurants - hamburger steak with demiglace sauce. I decided to order their chicken cutlet with sauce. Mikako gave her meal an average rating, I however, enjoyed my meal. I like little homey places like this that have a friendly service.

Nakazato Market Street Festival 2009 /

One year has passed already as we find ourselves at the Nakazato Market Street festival again. I love summers in Japan with these small festivals happening all over. Unfortunately, it was so hot, that my friends and I just bought some food and headed to his house to eat (friend's house being nearby). We must have been at the festival for a total of fifteen minutes or less!

Takoyaki Ippo /

Some time around May, a new tako-yaki stand called [Ippo] opened in our neighborhood. That would be little dumplings filled with octopus if you didn't know. On one of our nightly walks, we went there and ordered some tako-yaki to go. You have a choice of five different flavors - sauce, soy sauce, ponzu, yuzu-ponzu, or iwa shio (salt). You can also order extra toppings of onion, cheese, or abura-kasu. We ordered the sauce flavored tako-yaki. But this tako-yaki stand doesn't just serve tako-yaki. There is also tako-sen and kyabetsu-yaki on the menu.

The finished product. To give you my honest opinion though - it was nothing to rave about. Not a bad night-time snack. However, the tako-yaki we had at last year's Azabu Juban Festival were much better. They used the little whole octopus and were twice as large. We'll be munching on some those next month.

Oh, I forgot to add that [Ippo] has there own web-site. Check them out at:

Japanese Microbrew Tour - Kanagawa Prefecture /

A couple of beers from Kanagawa Prefecture that I found at my neighborhood sake shop. Yep, the name sounds German but it really is a Japanese microbrew - it is SanktGallen named after the St. Gallen Monestary in a small Swiss town near the border with Germany. I tried there Amber Ale and Golden Ale.

Amber Ale - nice and refreshing. Tastes almost like a dark beer but not quite (it's an ale after all).

Golden Ale - lighter than the amber, but not quite a lager (because its an ale I tell ya!)

For a limited time, our neighborhood supermarket also carried some microbrews from Kanagawa Prefecture called Yokohama Beer. There was an Altbier, a Pilsner, and a Lager. Alas, I missed out on the Altbier and Pilsner, but did manage to grab myself a Yokohama Lager. Actually it was called "Kai Kou Lager" celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of Yokohama Port.

As I find myself drinking mostly lagers, the taste is nearest to my regular choice of Kirin's Ichiban Shibori.

Cafe Birdie NaNa /

A couple of weeks ago, friends of ours invited us to hang out with them at the Komazawa Olympic Park. But before heading into the park for a day of cycling, flying kites, and just walking around, we first decided to have lunch. We chose a place called Cafe Birdie NaNa that was family friendly and close to the park itself. We didn't expect anything fancy but I must say, this cafe is well worth the trip just for the food! While our friends chose the omelette rice with beef stew and the loco moco, Mikako chose the homemade hamburger steak. I couldn't resist the pork spareribs! All the dishes looked and tasted delicious!

Home Party with Friends /

If it wasn't for the couple pictured above, I may never have gotten married. It's true. This is the former Master and Mama-san of the oden-yatai where I was a regular. It's also where I met Mikako. It's been a few years since the yatai was retired, but we were invited to their home for an informal get together.

Suitengu Shrine /

On our walk around Monzen Nakacho and the Eitai Bridge, we ende up at Suitengu Shrine before heading back home. Apparently people go here to wish for pregnancy or a safe birth (which isn't the reason why we went there, by the way).

If you've lived in Tokyo long enough, you would probably know Tokyo's main microbrew from T. Y. Harbor Brewery. But that is not the beer I'm introducing today. Instead, I came across a beer that was being sold at a convenience store near my work office. It was called [Shinagawa-ken Mugi-Shu].

The little blurb about using Japan's oldest yeast and being made by Japan's oldest brewery.

A little history of the beer and its revival which states that the governor of the then Shinagawa Prefecture, in order to improve the livelihood of its inhabitants built Japan's first brewery in 1869. The bottle says its made with Japan's oldest yeast and brewed in Japan's oldest brewery built in 1869 but closed after 8 years. In 2006 Lake Tawaza Brewery in Akita Prefecture decided to revive this lost beer.

It has also won the grand prize from the Tokyo Metropolitan Novice Worker's Research Department (or something to that effect if my translation is correct)

Bottoms up!

Matsunami Ramen /

As we were taking our daily walk around our neighborhood, we had discovered a new ramen shop that just opened. We decided to go there for lunch on our day off. The name of the place is called [Matsunami Ramen]. Their specialty is chinese noodles and tantan-men. While I ordered the tantan-men, Mikako chose the chashu-men. Both choices were delicious. The shop itself has a nice homey feel to it as well. It's located right along side the tracks of the Setagaya Line.

We sat at the counter and watched the staff make our ramen. It was mid-afternoon and other customers had just left so I took the opportunity to take a picture of the interior of the store (with the owner's permission of course).

Yakitori Club /

I've been meaning to write this post for quite a while, now seems like a good time as any. If you're an American and have been to a Japanese restaurant stateside, you may find yakitori on the menu and what you would most likely be served a skewer of chicken breasts and green onions in an alternating order. What you are served Stateside is called negima While this is yakitori, it is only one type of yakitori. So I'm going to take this opportunity to fill you in on some of the other types of yakitori. Oh, by the way, the Yakitori Club is a chain restaurant. I just happen to like the atmosphere of the Setagaya branch.

This is my favorite yakitori dish.

For those of you who think that's just too much meat, you will find other meatless items on the menu. We ordered them as well. We also ordered some yaki-onigiri (grilled rice-balls), chicken-filled miso, and to end our meal, we ordered chazuke (another rice dish)

Green Tea Flavor Coca-Cola & Cola Shock /

After Pepsi came out with their Pepsi Shiso, I discovered that Coca-Cola released their green tea flavored coke! So of course I had to try it. It sounds like a really bad combination but to be honest, the drink didn't have a tad of green tea flavor to it. It tasted like regular coke.

I also discovered this related cola drink (currently being advertised on television), and being a big fan of coke, I just had to try this as well. With a name like Cola Shock, I thought it would be like Jolt Cola with extra caffeine. It may not have had extra caffeine, but it was mixed with vodka! Yep, it was an alcoholic beverage. Although you could hardly taste the vodka. This also tasted like regular coke. So much for my new cola adventures, I should have just treated myself to a Classic Coke.

A Walk around Monzen Nakacho (Part 1) /

Recently as Mikako was watching television, some program featured Monzen Nakacho in Koto Ward. We decided that would be the next neighborhood we would explore. The piece Mikako watched also mentioned that Monzen Nakacho holds a flea market three times a month and they day we decided to go happened to fall on one of those days. We also went with the intention of having Fukagawa meshi for lunch which the area is known for, it's a clam-filled rice dish. A friend of ours said there's nothing but drinking establishments around the area and one large shrine that houses a portable shrine worth some 100 million dollars!

Definitely a lot of drinking establishments, but we were walking around the area in the afternoon so most of these places were not open.

This is the first building of interest that we came upon in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of the name of this place so it shall remain a mystery.

Next, it was off to Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine to check out Japan's most expensive portable shrine.

What makes this mikoshi (portable shrine) so expensive? It's made with diamonds and rubies. The largest diamond being 7 carats. It's also made with two 4 carat diamonds, two 3 carat diamonds, four 1 carat diamonds, and 2010 rubies! Which puts the value of this shrine to nearly 100 million dollars!

Ern's Monthly Visual Victuals (June 2009) /

Okay, I know I'm a little late with my monthly movie reviews but what the heck, better late than never right? I decided starting this month that I would change my policy of only writing my movie reviews in English and write the reviews in Japanese as well. Also for the Japanese film, I will write the review in Japanese first followed by an English translation. The Hollywood films and other foreign films, I will write the review in English first followed by Japanese. Also for the foreign films, I will try to list them with their original titles with their English and Japanese titles as well. As I mentioned before, I spent more time reading books, so there isn't that much variety this month in films. Check it out.

I never get tired of watching Hayao Miyazaki films, and this would be one of my favorites. Well, actually, they're all my favorites. And as it was being aired on network television, I ended up watching it again.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS [Vegas no Koi ni Katsu Rule] (2008) – Okay, I knew this was going to be a predictable rom-com, this time with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. Diaz’s fiancé breaks up with her and finds herself heartbroken. Kutcher is a slacker who gets fired from his job by his dad who also happens to be his boss, in the hopes that Kutcher will learn something about responsibility. So, what do these two do to get out of the slumps? They head to Vegas! In the morning Diaz and Kutcher are shocked to find that they are married and can’t get along and are about to go their separate ways. But Kutcher borrows a quarter from Diaz and wins a $3,000,000 jackpot at a casino, which leads to a court case, which leads to the judge sentencing them to 6 months hard marriage!

2(1991) – With the release of “Terminator: Salvation” hitting the theaters here in Japan, the network television aired Terminator 2 and Terminator 3 in successive weeks. Why the aired Part 3 before Part 2 is still a mystery to me though. This is one of the better sequels to come out of Hollywood in quite a while. Excellent film (and they should have probably ended it here, but no, they had to make a Part 3 to prominently feature a female terminator) and who knows about the last in the series, which by the way is called “Terminator 4” in Japan.

ゲゲゲの鬼太郎:千年呪い歌 [Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro: Sennen Noroi Uta] International English Title: [KITARO AND THE MILLENNIUM CURSE] (2002) – や~小学生の時日本に住んでたもんで、僕と自分の兄貴がよく「ゲゲゲの鬼太郎」のアニメを観てましたね。

As I spent my elementary years living in Tokyo (being an army brat and all), my brother and I used to watch the Kitaro cartoons all the time. It was one of our favorite programs. So with the release of the full-length live-action films, I was pretty excited. I had already seen the first one and I finally got around to renting the second full-length feature as well. This is one cartoon that even Mikako does not mind watching. Eiji Wentz reprises his role as Kitaro as well as the other members of his yokai gang. The story revolves around this millennium curse. I also enjoy the fact that my favorite Japanese actress Rena Tanaka reprises her role as Neko-musume and she does this dance sequence in the movie where she is just too cute for words!

(2002) – Winner of the Golden Camera Award at Cannes in 2007. A joint French and Israeli production. Oh, but for the life of me, do not choose movies because they have won an award – especially at Cannes or Venice. This is the kind of movie that just plods along with too many characters that you don’t get a chance to really get to know or even like so you end up not really caring what becomes of them. Give it a pass.

(2006) – Here’s a lame movie from the U.K. Dude’s girlfriend breaks up with him which causes dude to have amnesia. Since he’s been awake for over two weeks, dude takes a job working at a 24hr supermarket – were introduced to a few more strange characters as well. All in all – boring. Go rent “Clerks” instead.

Seibei is a low-ranking samurai and widower who works in a warehouse during the day and takes odd jobs at night to make ends meet to raise his two daughters and to take care of his senile mother. His colleagues call him the “twilight Samurai” because he seems to have no fun and goes straight home after work. He is also forced to a duel against his wishes against a swordsman who has been sentenced to death. Hm, it seems like the plot line for Takuya Kimura’s “Love and Honor” is quite similar to this, although this film came out five years before his. Oh, and this stars Hiroyuki Sanada (you know, from “The Last Samurai” and “Speed Racer”).

I hope you enjoyed my choices for the month (even if I didn't enjoy all of them). My friend Traci will be happy to know that I will finally get a chance to watch one of her recommended films (from a few years ago) - "Born into Brothels" that was finally released for rental here in Japan. And I am hoping to see the new Harry Potter film at the theater. I also bought a couple of Tom and Jerry DVDs as well as a Looney Tunes one which I haven't gotten around to watching and I still have quite a few other flicks waiting to be watched as well. Until next month...

Go! Go!

Last month when our computer was on the fritz, we took it to the shop where we bought it (which happens to be Akihabara). Although I was only looking for a replacement adaptor, the store clerk convinced me to have my entire system checked out since it was still under warranty. That I would be without a computer for two weeks or more was a bit of a shock though. Anyway, after parting ways with said computer, it just happened to be lunch time. Mikako recalled our friend saying that there was a great curry shop in Akihabara and if we had the chance, we should go check it out. Mikako then called our friend to see what the name of the place was and at the same time I saw a huge sign with a gorilla on it featuring curry. And that just happened to be the curry shop our friend had recommended. He also mentioned to be sure to order extra curry roux as well! So I ordered the curry with pork cutlet with extra curry roux and Mikako ordered the curry with prawns, also with extra curry roux. The curry also comes with a side of cabbage which you could get free refills of. Yes, I said you could get as much cabbage as you want. Really! Delicious!

Bangladesh Festival 2009 /

Back to one of my favorite subjects - food! A few weeks ago, there was a Bangladesh Festival held at Yoyogi Park. Of course we had to go. We went with the knowledge that we would be eating curry and tandoori chicken, but we would also check out some different items as well. The festival isn't as popular as the annual Thai Festival or the Namaste India Festival, which means there are no long lines at the food booths and finding a place to sit and eat isn't a chore. We went with a few friends for a pleasant afternoon.

No long lines in front of the food stalls!

But without the large crowds, it doesn't seem like a festival.

And now for what you've all been waiting for:

Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum (Part 4) /

This is the last installment of the Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum. I shall start out with featuring an old sign advertising a popular Japanese drink - Calpis. Below the drink, it says "Hatsukoi no Aji" which translates to "The Taste of First Love".

Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum (Part 3) /

As promised, before checking out the Showa era buildings, it was time for lunch. There is a restaurant [Kura] inside the park grounds that serves udon. Mikako and I ordered the bukkake udon. It was very delicious!

Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum (Part 1) /

Recently, Mikako and I went to the Edo-Tokyo Museum in Ryogoku. I also bought a booklet of the museum before we left. When I read it at home, at the very end was a page featuring the Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum. Of course we had to check it out. The place is located in an area between Hana Koganei and Musashi Koganei in Koganei Park.

This building is the entrance to the Open-Air Museum.

The weather wasn't cooperating but we felt the rain gave the museum a lot more atmosphere. And since we are able to go inside the buildings as well, we can always get out of the rain.

Now it's time to take a tour through the open-air museum itself. The place is divided into three zones, the West Zone, the Center Zone, and the East Zone. We shall start our tour by checking out the West Zone first.

Well okay, this isn't a building, but I love old cannons as well. This is a gohou - a cannon for signalling noon.

I think this was Mikako's favorite house of all the buildings we saw. Den'enchofu is considered the Beverly Hills of Tokyo. This building was built in 1925 when Western style houses were still very rare.

Japanese Microbrew Tour - Miyazaki Prefecture /

For all you craft beer lovers, the next Prefecture on the list is Miyazaki. It's the hometown of a friend of mine, who brought me back three kinds of Hideji Beer, after his visit home. The three brands are from Hideji Beer based in Nobeoka Mukabaki. The labels all of an animal motif, but the fox pilsner my friend brought back features a caricature of Miyazaki Prefectures governor, Hideo Higashikokubaru.

Next up is Hideji Beer's Smoking Mole Ale.

A little stronger than the pilsner and tastes great as well.

And finally my favorite kind - a dark beer or rather a Bohemian Garnet Lager.

Aren't the labels great? And writing about Japanese Microbrews makes me want to try more. Off to another prefecture.

Finn's Cafe & Restaurant /

After walking through the Edo Tokyo Museum and before heading to Yokoamicho Park, we decided to have lunch. And even though we were in Ryogoku, we did not go out for chanko nabe. We settled for this little Italian place called [Finn's] which is near the museum's entrance. Today's lunch special was a tomato sauced based pasta with komatsuna.

Pepsi Shiso Soda /

What is shiso you ask? I looked it up in a Japanese-English dictionary and discovered shiso to be the beefsteak plant. Does it taste good as a soda? Hm, I prefer my soda without the plant.
